Every morning when we crank it up it runs terrible until it warms up. Yesterday it was back firing and shooting flames out the carb. Adjusted the timing by turning distributor. Ran much, much better. This morning running like crap again. No flames out carb, that's an improvement. Adjusted carb, helped a bit. Took hood and gas tank off. Adjusted valves, 5 had zero clearance. Runs much better. But exhaust side of manifold has one part almost rusted off. Radiator has a least one good hole in it...... And loader cylinder still leaks ( because we ain't fooled with it yet lol). Manifold from this site any good? My wife already has the manifold off.........

I was very pleased with the Super A manifold I got from this site recently.
Much better built than the original.
Good talking with you last night.

Backfire through carb means intake valves aren't closing, not sealing, rusty valve guide or rusty valve. .

Leaky intake valve will blow air backwards through carb creating a very rich fuel mix and run like crap.
Check timing, Checks condition of points too.

Bad valves will not seal properly, allowing moisture to get to the spark plug and hard to start with a wet plug. Look at the plug tomorrow morning. See if the plug is wet before starting.

Do a compression test while you are at it.

As long as you are having fun, keep doing what you are doing.

I think you are learning that not all tractors found in the weeds are worthy of saving.

Since each morning it does this and then warms up and adjusts out of it. I'm going to say it is a valve issue or maybe a coil with a bad spot in a winding.

Start it up cold and let it run at slow speed. While it is running spray around the intake manifold with something like WD40. If it smooths out for a bit then, either leaking gasket or leak on the intake side. Also it might just need a valve job. Regrind on the seats and lapping the valves could do wonders.

Manifold is no better or worse than what you can get anywhere else. They are all the same aftermarket manifold made in the same factory. Only difference is the box it comes in and the price you pay.

Any chance there is moisture in the cap ? Might make some sense after sitting overnight. Just a thought.

Is that manifold leaking? I don't know which engine you have but.....

Years ago I ran into a Ford industrial engine, 172 cu. in. I think, in a log skidder with a cracked exhaust manifold, pretty much broken in two if I recall correctly.

Ran terrible, couldn't get it to run right. Talked to an oldtimer with experience on those machines. Replace the manifold he said then fine tune it.

Did that, ran perfect with very little adjustment after.
