OT Chevy Transmission Issue?

I purchased a 1999 1500 Silverado a year ago with 105,000 miles on it. I have only put 5,000 miles on it since I bought it, all trouble free. 5.3 engine, automatic transmission, electric controlled transfer case. Older person had it and had passed away, so I knew the history. Thanksgiving day while traveling to family, had cruise set at 60. It suddenly acted like it went in to neutral, engine raced and coasted to a stop. I stopped and checked trans fluid. It is kind of discolored, but I couldn't smell it being burned. After restarting, it would move a bit, allowing me to get off the road, then did the same thing stopped moving. Any ideas if the trans failed suddenly while traveling down the road? Possible the transfer case went in to a neutral position? I had it towed to our sons and that's where its currently at, 100 miles away. I need to decide where to go from here. The older owner did at one time tow a camper with it, but he hadn't for a few years prior to his passing away.

Get someone to read the codes for the problem. It is most likely a control module failure that will cost from $100 to $1000 to replace and reprogram depending on who does the job and where the module comes from.

psimmer, Any codes? How old is the trans fluid? Maybe a fluid change with a new filter will do the trick,

Guido.

Moving a little after a restart would rule out transfer case issues.

And first and reverse are more or less free of electronic glitches, being directly engaged by the position of the manual valve.

Pressure control IS electronic but should be enough to move the vehicle even WITH electronic failure, so I'm betting on some sort of internal transmission failure.

Trouble codes are likely to point to ratio errors, indicating it didn't engage but probably not indicating WHY.

Will be interesting what it turns out to be.

All I can tell ya at this time if the trans has to come out replace the rear engine cover. The cover from GM comes with the cover as a unit. It has the rear main seal installed in the cover it has a new gasket and all new bolts the cover gasket leaks and a know issue on them. I would also install a new oil pressure sending unit and clean all the grounds on the back of the engine while I had the trans out.

Any chance of trailering it back to your place? 100 mi away is not the best, as you already know. Stan

You can't be serious, Guido! Changing the oil at this point would be like giving a vaccination to a corpse.

If the transmission will not move the truck, it has mechanical issues inside. Oil would still move the truck regardless of the condition of the oil.

Most (if not ALL) automatic transmissions have a 'default' mode that does not depend on any electronics. That is by design. The normal default mode is one forward gear, reverse, and parking lock will operate in the absence of electronic function. That rules out modules and computer problems.

A scanner that will scan for transmission codes might give you a better idea of what has failed, but most likely the transmission will have to come out and come apart to fix it.

Bought an '02 Silverado, 4x4 4.3l with 200,000 km (120,000 mi.) and when the tranny started acting up a few months later, a mechanic told me that series of trucks were bad to have the tranny let go at about that mileage, and it did. A $2700 rebuild later, the truck is still going five years later. To say I was annoyed at the time would be to say the least......

(quoted from post at 01:46:35 11/29/21) Transfer case could be in neutral or [u:dc46103451]stripped the input hub[/u:dc46103451] mine did that but it popped when it did

If it moved just a bit after the initial coast down and stopped again, that is a likely possibility.
Just enough spline left to move a bit more.

Truck moved after restart. Wouldn't do that if the transfer case was in neutral would it?
