My old boss cleaned out his garage that came from his fathers estate, and gifted me aa 6000 watt generator with a 10hp Tecumseh motor. I am going to change oil, and would like some recommendations on what to refill the crankcase with.Happy Holidays to all.CM

I have a 10 hp tecumseh.
I've never had one that the carb didn't leak when no running.
If tank is empty, that might be a good thing. It leaked and carb will be empty.
Add a shutoff.

I would recommend you buy some hearing plugs. ;-) Seriously, it's nice that you got it for free.

Synthetic diesel oil, 10w-30 if it's cold, 15w40 for warm weather.

Diesel oil is better suited for engines without emissions controls.

If your going to start it every month or 2, synthetic is fine, but if your going to leave it for 6 months then conventional oil might be better. I learned in a lubrication seminar that synthetic oil has less cling, so it reduces friction, but it also drains off faster, leaving engine parts bare, for a dry start or corrosion. Anyone else ever hear this theory? Maybe it was just the opinion of the Mobil engineer that did the seminar!

What year was this seminar? What you say may apply to synthetic oils from 50 years ago. Does it still apply today, I don't know.
