Yanmar/Gravely time delay

Recently I was given an old Gravely PM400 basket case. I overhauled the Yanmar engine, got it running, and the mower seems to be in pretty good shape. This is my first diesel. There is a little round thing in the wiring called a Time Delay. What does this do - what does it delay? I have not experienced any delays in the pre-heat or starting process - is there a problem I'm not aware of?

Most likely for the safety switches so if you hit a bump and come off the seat momentarily it doesn't shut the machine down. Gives a second or 2 before the safeties kick in.

Just guessing, it may have an oil pressure safety shut down or alarm.

The delay gives the pressure time to come up on start up before the shut down kicks in.

Yep, EXACTLY, VERY common on yard equipment, and nowadays even on ag tractors, combines and other machinery.

Here is mine..........

Serial number 000187
It does not have the air heater, maybe an option?
Per the wiring diagram......
The time delay is wired to ground, to seat switch, toa relay to ignition switch , pto switch and the starter solenoid.

I looked at the wiring diagram, and agree with what you say. I still don't understand why you would want a delay in the starting circuit, as once a diesel is running, delaying the start process makes no sense to me. It does have 3 pre-heaters on the intake of the engine, but they are wired direct to a push button and then direct to the battery. When I start it, I pre-heat 20 seconds, turn the switch to start, and it turns over instantly. The engine kill if you are bounced off is on gas engines where it can ground the magneto. Whatever it's for, everything seems to work; I'm just trying to figure it all out. I like your canopy and spray tank.
