Guidance on starting diesel engine for first time in 5yr

Hello all I finally got this farmall 706 home. The engine is the diesel d282 with 2900 hrs. I have never owned a diesel before and would like some guidance on where to start to get it running. It has been sitting for 5 or so yrs. The diesel in the tank looks good and the system has held it's prime. I have new filters for it already. Just looking for guidance on the steps that I need to perform to safely get it running again. Any other guidance on things to check are also welcome. Thanks

By what indication are you determining that it has not
lost its prime? If you turned the engine with a injector
line loose to determine if fuel was squirting out of the
loose connection then you have went past what I was
going to warn you of. Which would be the possibility of
parts in the pump sticking and then when the engine is
turned things twist off. But if you got it to pump fuel it
must not be stuck. From here I know what I would do
but I will wait to see other recommendations. That is
an indirect injection engine. Which means the injector
delivers fuel into a precup area ..small chamber.. with
an opening into cylinder. A glow plug tip also projects
into the chamber. The glow plug is operated by the
electrical system. A button on the dash will be held 20
seconds or more depending on the ambient temp and
the temp of the engine. Here is a discussion from a
forum post about flow plug operation. ..Depends on
how cold the temperature is. Normal summer time
operation is around 30-45 sec. At 0 degrees F your
probably looking at 3-4 minutes. The latter takes a
good set of batteries and a whole lot more cranking
amps than IH called for when new.. So that system has
to be functional for it to start. When the button is
pushed the gauge should swing most of the way to the
right if all the glow plugs are good. I have said enough
see what others add.

The first thing I do on them is to remove the glow plugs and
lube the cylinders. and let it sit a half day of a full day. Also
check each glow plug on a battery. Open fuel filter drains and
check for water and rust. If things look good I just bleed them.
If not replace and bleed. Pull oil pan drain plug. Check for
water. Most times just drain the oil also. Check the coolant.
Check and clean air cleaner. Get a good battery in it and start
it. Old diesel burns the same or better than this nowadays
stuff. No need to worry about the fuel. My 560 had 30 year old
fuel in it and ran just fine, even had that old fuel smell that u
dont smell anymore.

The engine prep has pretty well been covered.

I will add look over the air intake for rodent nesting, look the electrical
system for chewing.

Be sure you have a known good battery and all connections are clean and tight.

Have the wrench ready to disconnect the battery quickly, just in case. Have a
fire extinguisher close by.

Have a plan to block the air intake if it runs away.

Loosen all the gear case, hydraulic, and engine drain plugs and check for water
before starting. A lot easier to get the water out first, before it gets whipped
into an emulsified mess!
