I think it was in '77 I had a chance to go to the north end of Vancouver island, Cape Scott is the Northern
most point. One of the guys had been a park ranger in the Park and knew the territory and potential weather
conditions. We went in February when sometimes there is a break in the weather, there wasn't. We spent 3
days in my van making & drinking tea and reading. We walked through to St Jose' beach and viewed the
remnants of a Finnish settlement that had planted themselves there in the '30's and only stayed so many
years. In getting into the park an hiking around I remember climbing up onto ancient trees that had fallen
naturally, I was easily 20' off the forest floor. The trunk off the tree was covered with moss, it was like
a walk on a big moss covered tube high off the forest floor, definitely Lord of the Rings territory. Al the
park ranger said it wasn't worth going to the cape if the weather didn't break. Supposedly a nice place.
