peace and quiet

I have a small diesel Ford tractor (1600) and was wondering if it causes any harm (as long as the inlet and exhaust are the correct size) to put the quietest muffler I can find on it. Its so loud now that you gotta wear (I know you really should always) hearing protection hearing protection when you even think of starting it up. It has a new muffler on it but it doesn't seem to do much to quiet things down. Thanks

Mufflers from car engines larger than yours will not damage your tractor. The quiet mufflers from quiet cars do not cause engine
issues. In fact there is only one consideration and that is making sure the added weight is supported by brackets and clamps in a
way that doesn't stress the exhaust manifold. DO it. Jim

A lot of the new aftermarket mufflers have a hole straight through them from bottom to top. They are only slightly quieter than a straight pipe but not by much. Like Jim mentioned almost any muffler that will fit your manifold outlet will work. Be careful the muffler you get is not too long where it could hit a low door sill or low tree limbs if it is a vertical muffler.

Are you sure the noise is coming from the exhaust?

Try holding a large rag over the exhaust, see if it makes a big difference. If so a better muffler will help.

If not, maybe you hear a lot of engine noise.

It is a straight through muffler, is an offset muffler quieter? The motor/fan does create a respectable amount of noise but the put-put of the exhaust at ear level is the first and easiest/cheapest thing to try first. Thanks

otta money, but I'll bet a Supertrapp would do something. Check with their technical assistance if you're game.

On them puppys it is a lot of injection knock / rattle what ever ya want to call it and yes the exhaust is a BIt loud and yes you may find a quieter Muffler that will Muffle it more . On the I H's i work on if you want to tame lest say and 706-806 down then use the muffler off the 56 series tractors. When your old and 3/4 Deff after years of loud engines heavy equipment and gun fire and explosions I am not the one to say if it loud .

After you chase your tail for a few weeks with mufflers look at pictures of every tractor made in the last 25 years. You will see that all of them have side panels covering the engines. This is not just for looks, it is because of Federal noise abatement laws. Go look at tractors on a lot. You will see not only covers but also foam rubber and baffles in the engine compartment behind the covers. This is not just tractors it is also trucks. All of this is because the noise is not just from the exhaust just as much is from the block, the head, the pump, etc.

Off set will be quieter. If you can find one, look through a muffler catalog,Walker used to list
universal mufflers in the rear of the book. They will give you pipe and body sizes.

The original muffler on my 1720 was a lot quieter than the Stanley muffler I had to replace it with. The newer muffler has a loud and tin high sound to it, not nearly as
good.

Extending the pipe up taller would help on these small tractors, get the noise up and away, but then its pretty easy to lose the whole muffler on a low tree or roof, we
tend to use these in cramped places so not easy to do so.

Do the dealers still sell OEM mufflers or are they all less expensive after market replacements?
