Extra wide exterior door frame?

Does anyone make a prehung exterior door with wider than standard frame?. When I built my house in 93 I ordered my doors custom built. My walls are 2 x 6 studs with 1/2 drywall inside and 1 inch foam outside. That's 5 1/2 plus 1/2 plus 1. That's 7 inches. Those doors were the better series Pease brand which were supposed to be good. One failed about 10 years ago and I was able to order a Peachtree brand door with the same dimensions-it wasn't cheap. I guess Pease is gone and maybe Peachtree too. I need to replace another one or two. One is my garage door which sets down into the poured wall a little so that one is even wider-8 inches plus inside and outside sheating. Its not as simple as adding extensions to the inside frame edges. I have some of that in my garage. While it works, sort of, it creates a situation where the bolt on the backset rubs across the extension every time its swung. Are there custom doors available?

Build your own jambs with whatever material it takes to make it work the way you like. A jamb extension works ok, set the extension by the hinge, creating a reveal around the jamb similar to what you do with the casing only a little wider. Your door will only open a bit past 90 degrees that way.

Jambs for 2x6 framing can't be that difficult to find, a lot of places it's code to use 2x6's. I bet you could order doors or jambs from any of the box stores.

I put two doors in my garage last summer. Being the thrifty person that I am, I bought doors for 3 1/2 framed walls that were on sale.

Pulled the outside trim off, added jamb extensions, put
The outside trim back on.

Bingo. I believe Peachtree is gone as well. Talk to a good lumber yard man, not just a salesman. There are options out there depending on the region.

Tom, go with a Therma Tru brand door unit, that's all I use in my building business. They have lots of jamb width options as well as jamb materials also as in full composite jambs, which I just about always use. Door skin can either be steel or fiberglass which I use mostly. Lowes handles Therma Tru, but it's a cheaper version. I'm guessing it's rotted at the bottom of the frames ? If you find something close in jamb width, any adding to the jamb should be to the exterior side of the jamb after removing the exterior molding, the door should be even with the wall inside ! Hope this is helpful. Alan

Thought of that, but if you buy 3 1/2 inch frames and add 3 plus inches to the outside frame, your threshold is 3 inches too narrow on the outside

If you have a Menards near you they offer up to a 7 1/2 jamb in their mastercraft door line. I attached the link to their online door design center. Hopefully you can find something that will work for you. I only found the 7 1/2 jamb available by itself, it was not listed as an option on a prehung door, but I did not look very hard either.

This is my cup of tea, my employer wholesales to the lumberyard, where are you at?
Go to a local store, not a box.
Is this an inswing or outswing?
Start with a 6/9 exterior jamb, then rip another set to get your total depth.Lay a bed of caulk, then Drill through the sets with long exterior screws, put the extension on the exterior part, then you have no trouble with inside hinges.
Send me an email, with a contact, I can share more. STAY away from the box store! GG
I can send you pics of the parts!

FYI, you can get extra depth strikes, on Amazon, or build.com. I only needed a 1/2 extra on a standard strike, (2 and 1/4) but they sell all the way up to a 4 strike extension.(They're all one piece)

I just add extensions to jams.
Same with windows,
Started making walls thicker that standard back in 1985.

I have done quite a bit of commercial construction. If you want to spend money I have had steel frames bent to almost any dimension.

Yup, hollow metal doors and frames, actually rolled, but to a certain gauge, then has to be done by a press brake, like a detention door and frame for correctional facilities. You can get quite array of Jamb Depth's for commercial hollow metall, usually does not cost more either.

Anderson windows in mn will custom make what you want, that's what they do. They specialize refab work. Google Anderson windows and it should come up.

I'm having deja vu here. Have you asked this before recently?

You can get anything you want made, but extension jambs are the normal, accepted, correct, common solution to your situation. You might not like it, but there is nothing wrong with it.

You can order whatever you wish. .I grew up in a house with a 4 ft. wide front door and thick exterior walls. The door wasn't cheap but not that hard to find and order.

The door shop I work at we stock up to 9 1/4 jambs. We stock either 7 13/16 sills or a 5 5/8 with a 4 extension so I know they are out there.
