Chopped the stalks

Finally got the 6 ft Woods mower deck mounted to the Farmall A. Decided to chop some corn stalks in the 4 ac patch. Definitely all the tractor wants in the rows that had double stalks. Could take 3 rows, but mostly took 2 at a time. It took 8 hrs spread over the last two days. Threw a blade that had come unscrewed and had trouble with belts jumping off pulleys. Good work-out for the '46, got the oil changed afterwards. Wife's finger in the corner! Thrown belt hanging from the back of the tractor.

Yes that will give the tractor a workout but it is up to the task. If yor mower has the V pulley running off the belt pulley shaft in back the belt needs to be real tight. That is in the instructions. We might feel we are going easy on things by having the belt just tight enough to not slip but that is not enough. Its possible stalks are getting in the belt too. Just keep plugging away at it.

I put a 6 ft woods cornstalk chopper on my Mom's Farmall C. Converted mower to a finish mower. The boss mows her 2 acre yard plus parts of gravel pit with it.
She wouldn't trade that mower for any mower sold today. Loves the 71 year old Farmall.
And I hear about it when it's not running right.
The woods boys made a bullet proof mower after they got back from WW2,

Typically the 6 ft woods was made for the IH H.
IH C 5 ft. Cubs and A used a 4 ft.
I put a 6 ft on my IH C. It can handle it in second gear, but does a better job in
first gear.

Same thing if belt runs off a pulley
mounted on the PTO. Make sure you get the
twists in the V-belt in the proper places.
Makes the belt last a lot longer. Needs to
be fiddle string tight in my opinion.

Had tightened the mule drive pulleys with a hammer as I tightened the bolts. Thought it was tight. I don't have an instruction book or proper
identification decal for the mower, just know I took it off another 'A'. PTO pulley is light metal, not cast as I see on some sites. Stalks did
build up on the deck but I would stop and clean them off to avoid a friction fire under the pulleys.
