Price switch Diesel vs Gas

Years ago diesel was always cheaper than gasoline, but for years has been higher priced. Yesterday
I bought diesel at a Sheetz in York, PA. Price for diesel was 3.99. Premium gasoline was 4.59,
midrange gasoline was 4.05 and 87 octane was 3.69.

It has been years since I've seen diesel cheaper than even the premium gasoline. Why is it cheaper
right now?

I remember when diesel was cheaper.

Some claim after sulfur was removed the price shot up.

I also remember when lead was removed no lead was more expensive. They did a skit on Saturday night life about things costing more when something was removed.

Simple-minded people used to say 'we paid to put the lead in and now we're paying to get the lead out'. The fact was that higher octane fuel was required for higher compression engines and the cheapest way to increase the octane of gasoline was to add tetra-ethyl lead to it. When lead was outlawed it became necessary to increase the octane rating of gasoline without using lead. This was a more expensive process. I remember when we were still flying aircraft with recip engines. Military was using 115 octane gas (115/145). That gas had so much lead in it that our fingers would end up with a layer of white residue from all the lead whenever we came in contact with it. Some of the smaller engines ended up with lead fouled spark plugs. Looked like someone had soldered the points together. Hiller had to change the way they lubricated their transmissions with engine oil (a bad idea in the first place) because lead was fouling the Borg-Warner overrunning clutches. We had to add TCP (Tom Cat Pee) to those little engines' fuel to prevent lead fouling. All because of low bids for gasoline supplies that met govt specs.

Don't think it was posted wrong. I've seen other stations with similar prices. For some reason diesel is not as high as gasoline right now, at least in PA.

In my lovely part of Cali, diesel has been cheaper than 87 gas for a couple of years. No idea why, but I'm happy driving my diesel pickup.

Supply and demand.

The simple fact is diesel contains more BTUs per gallon, so it should be more expensive than gasoline. If you bought fuel by weight instead of volume, the two fuels would be closer in price.

I recall when diesel was cheaper and heard it takes less refining, but stories and reasons for things have been known to change over the years lol. I recall when lead had to be added to reduce pre ignition spark knocking and gas therefore cost more, but then it cost more in later years because they had to remove that darn lead lol...... Go figure.......... Regardless, it was stable and low the last few years then starting this January policy changes which affect supply and investment and drilling and exploration and leases made it like double THANKS A LOT

Well Drats, but life goes on Be Happy yall, God Bless America in these difficult times

Any trucker from the 1980's and 90's will tell you that the price of diesel surpassed the price of low and mid grade gas when so many four wheeler diesels became popular.
And sold at every station.

Diesel is still higher here. Oil prices have never made a lot of sense to me. I can remember when kerosene was less than half the price of gasoline. Look at it now.
