Should I buy or Pass on this 706 Farmall diesel.

Hello everyone I'm new to this forum and needing some advice. I found an old farmall 706 diesel today. The owner reports it ran just fine when he parked it several years ago. The tractor is a tricycle with decent tread on both back tires. The left rear will require a rim its rusted through. The metal is in great condition. The tractor has been sitting for a long time and has not been started. It is sitting outside. I checked the oil and it looks good no water. The owner is asking 800 is this a decent price in the condition its in.

If the engine is not seized up and the oil appears uncontaminated it might be worth the risk.

That is basically the scrap price. So unless it has multiple broken components, it will be a good buy. If the engine has been
protected from water getting into the exhaust, it might just be a great buy. Realize it will consume your free time, and be an
expense, but you can't buy a used lawn mower for that money. Jim

$800 is a fair price for its condition. If you can easily get it running and driving it could be a great deal. If you get into it and it needs a lot of work you can still haul the parts to a salvage yard and not loose much. I would trust that, if the seller has owned the tractor a long time, he knows what he is exactly what he is selling and the cheap price represents what you will find.

Trying to fix it up is where it could turn into a real money pit, costing you something like another $7,200 to get a tractor that is only worth $4,000 when you get done. Shifters were a problem. Late ones with the 756 engine are worth more but are much more expensive to rebuild. TA parts are $1,000. Right now it is a pig-in-a-poke. Before you buy it, determine how time and how much more money are you willing to pour into it.

Have fun.

Not gonna beat the price!!
If your looking for a fixer upper, and
don't want 800 bucks tied up in
something that might not turn out to
be a fixer upper, I would at least see
if the engine is free (not seized up).
Otherwise, you wouldn't have any
trouble getting your money back by
parting or scrapping it, if things
don't work out and time is not an
issue on money return.

I just spoke with the owner he said it has been setting for 5 years. He said it ran good when parked. I think I'll buy it plan on going tomorrow to look closer at tractor. Thanks for all the comments.

Was more than likely not a good runner when parked. Won't pay to restore it and a lot of work to scrap it for not much return. Will be cheaper to buy a good runner. Speaking from experience.

Since when has restoring a tractor "paid" at least in dollars? Only time it "pays" is when you are doing it professionally and you can soak the customer for way more than the tractor will be worth when it's done.

Anyone doing more than a Rustoleum Restoration (DuPont costs too much) and expecting a financial return on their investment is delusional.

That ran good when parked is an old wives tale...cop out for probably a piece of crap.....after sitting 5 years and all that
accompanies that.

It is priced at scrap value, so it really depends on what you want to do with it.

Ran good when parked? Just ask yourself, who would take a cold running tractor and jut leave it sit outside for 5 years and never start it again?

My 5020 was like that. Was parked 23 years outside in kansas.
Owner 5old me thete was a problem with engine but did not remember. It was his father tractor.
Tractor started agter injection pump rebuilt and left the farm on its own power...
I found the issue recently while lugging the engine hard, head gasket is seeping water outside: a 200 to 350 dollars fix. Engine runs to good for full overhaul.

Not sure why all the skepticism about ran when parked?People park things every day and time just goes on.The
guys only asking scrap price.Vice Grip Garage has almost a million subscribers by resurrecting parked junk and
driving it hundreds of miles to home.

Depends if you plan on using it . You wont buy a new tractor
thats built like the one hes looking at and cost 70000
compared to the ten he might put in this one

I called the owner tonight got some good history on the tractor. The owner said it was a good tractor never gave him any issues. He bought it from older farmer who passed. The tractor had been in barn for long time. The owner said he put in new fuel filters and new fuel and it fired right up. The owner is older I dought or hope he would not be telling me a story just to get me to buy it. I collect tractors find them and slowly fix them up drive them around my farm just for fun. Plan on buying it this older guy seems real.

Personally, I see a few variables here. D-282 or D310 German, Fast Hitch, three point or just drawbar, round fenders, flat top, or none. All these affect my value if I needed to part it out.

I hate to say this but my D-21 Allis sit in a shed and wasnt started for 16 years...In 2020 I put a battery in it and it fired off in 5 seconds.
