I have a Ford 861 Powermaster tractor with ignition problems. After removing the distributor cap, I find I cannot remove the dust cover to access the rotor.

CAN ANYONE PROVIDE ME WITH THE TRICK TO REMOVING THE DUST COVER?

Thanks, Bill

Are you saying the dust cover and rotor came off with the cap and you can't separate the dust cover from the cap?

If so, it's NOT impossible that a "clever" P.O. used some sort of sealant or glue in an attempt to seal moisture out.

If all attempts at prying them apart without breaking them fail you may have to replace them.

The rotor (#2) is above the dust cover and gets removed after the distributor cap, then the spring clip (#38) the rotor was slid over. After removing the spring clip the dust cover(#34) should come off. If it is stuck a bit of gentle prying around the edge to free the gasket may be needed.

I use a small flat screw driver blade on the outside edge of the cover. A bump upward on the handle with the palm of my hand usually will dislodge it.
