Im looking at an 8430 stuck in 3rd gear unhooked cable it works good oil is clean owner said it happend 1 day when he went to drive it any ideas?and what would it take to fix thanks.

From neutral to 3rd is a synchronized shift. Assuming the shifting shaft from the outside is not jammed then something is up with the synchronizer. Does this have a blade on it? Extensive reverse operation prevents transmission lubrication including the synchronizers. Won't be cheap to repair and not sure what JD offers in terms of new parts for it anymore.

I AGREE with what you said about a synchronizer (for high range on the top shaft) being the likely issue.

My question to you is what does "extensive reverse operation" have to do with transmission lube, isn't transmission lube supplied by a pump driven from the top shaft, which runs the same direction whether the transmission is in forward or reverse?

Just CURIOUS as I haven't heard of that problem before, what have I missed?

As I understand it the transmission only receives lubricant while in forward but not reverse. Tim S most likely knows the
details relative to pump location and drive.

the trans pump drives off the top shaft, and the top shaft still turns in the same rotation in reverse. If this tractor seen a lot of forward/reverse action it wears the sychro's quickly ..it does sound like the top shaft shift is the issue.
