Yanmar/ oils

I bought a used track loader with a Yanmar engine. It calls for a lighter oil than I keep here, and use in everything else. So I got some 5W40. The machine was supposedly serviced before I got it, but I wanted to be sure it had the correct oil before cold weather. Oil change only took 1.5 gal, not the 2 gal specified. Oil was black as soon as I put it in. Do you suppose there might be 2 quarts which don't drain out?

5W40 $24.45/gal by 4 gal case
15W40 10.41/gal by 55 gal drum

What model of tractor loader? What model of Yanmar engine.

JD 317G track loader
I don't know the engine number without looking it up. 4 cyl turbocharged and aftercooled, about 65 HP.

A 317G is a Tier 4 engine Yanmar and Deere recommend 0w40 which your dealer should have in stock.

The 2 gallon capacity is for when the engine is dry meaning if the engine is brand new and there hasnt been oil in it.

I see viscosity listed but zero about oil additive specs .

Your not going to find much besides ck4 spec backwards
compatible. in diesel oil anyway unless you find some snake
oil

On the black as soon as you put it in comment.....I bought a 1988 tractor a couple of years ago in an estate sale. Apparently the owner didn't use it much later on in his life as it only had 900 hrs and apparently they were accumulated way back there. I changed the oil upon receipt and had the same problem. I drained the new oil into a reusable container and with the drain plug out ran my finger around and across the bottom of the oil pan. I had at least a quarter of an inch of sludge sitting there.

I put the oil back in with a 16 oz. can of Sea Foam and ran the tractor at 1500 RPM for half an hour. Shut it down and drained the oil. Felt back in and the sludge was gone. Filled with fresh oil and it stayed golden. Maybe you have that problem too.

Interesting difference. I have 3 small diesels. 2000 29hp Yanmar (JD 1145), 1992 16hp Kubota (B7100 HST), 1988 20hp Kubota (F2000). The Yanmar stays fairly clean, the Kubotas both turn black after a hour or two. All get changed every 50 hrs. with 15-40 Rotella. None use a drop of oil and if I had to speculate, the JD has the most hours as it was run commercially before I got it.
