A guy on Y tube posts about his soybean harvest, might be IA farmer. His combine started making unusual noises and smelling of smoke, he could detect the smell from the cab. He pulled lots of shields after evacuated his dog and computer monitors from the cab Soys produce tons of dust and are yielding almost record bushels acre. He finally found smoldering trash in back of the rotor around the beater discharge cylinder . He drove to near a hydrant and was able to douse the smoldering area with water. He and his Dad suspect the bearing on the beater discharge shaft behind the rotor had gone out and thats what produced the noise & nearly caught the combine on fire. This was an an STS bullet rotor 9660. You might check your bearings & shafts in the back of the machine for excess play on your morning maintenance check to be safe. Carry some type if fire extinguisher with you.

Years ago on my 750 Massey one night I thought I smelled smoke. Jumped out of that thing grabbing my extinguisher on the way down the ladder. Made a quick lap around machine. Nothing. Flipped open engine hood but without flashlight I could see nothing but thought the smell was stronger. Got poking around in engine compartment and finally saw a red glow in the dark. It was some chaff smoldering but no flame. Poked it apart and poured my coffee thermos on it. I was sure I had it out but when I quit for night I drove it 4 miles home and turned the water hose on the whole machine. No damage at all. I got lucky. That Massey was bad for getting chaff in the engine. The CaseIH I have now stays spotless in engine.

My F (F2? I forget which) Gleaner had a smell of smoke for a couple rounds, couldnt find anything years ago.

Bugged me enough I finally went home with it, poked around and the chaff from the beans somehow caked around the cross shaft the is down near the fan and tailings auger, the spinning shaft had a lot smoldering, once I disturbed things the smoldering got worse as it got oxygen. Got a little exciting for a bit, as there was only an inch to get to the area, and little slots on the sides....

You guys can lose a lot of your crop, plus a machine from fires. Nothing more fighting than a fire. Not on a combine, but I started a fire while mowing from a rock strike last year. Let me tell you my friend, that sacred the crap out of me. I had one water extinguisher, ran it out. The fire was still going. A couple gardeners came from now where, and we got the fire out I now carry two extinguishers, a shovel, and a rake. I started a fire on my JD 5020 under the battery box from a electrical short. I had a extinguisher handy and put it out. Scary times. Stan

I had the same thing happen years ago on a Massey 510 cutting beans. Bean dust on the exhaust manifold started smoldering. I drove it a mile and a half to the neighbors and used his garden hose to put it out. Scary!!!

Years ago a friend of mine was driving down the road and looked over into a field where A guy was running beans with a 6620 Deere,,smoke was billowing out of the right side of the machine,, the driver didn't notice it,, my friend hurried down through the field and caught up with the machine and started waving at the driver to stop,, the driver looked over at him and Waved back and kept on running.. my friend finally got him stopped and put the fire out,, a counter shaft bearing was cooking hot..
