Sun Baked Mag Cover

I'm finally getting back on my Fairbanks Morse flywheel engine.

Been assembling and painting, trying to get the look!

The mag cover is sun baked and has a gray oxidized look. I haven't tried to find a new one, just wondering if there is a trick to brightening this one up.

I'm afraid paint would look fake and might even be conductive.

Any ideas?

Also the name tag is dull. It's still readable so I want to keep the original without removing any more of the ink or paint, whatever they used.

Any ideas on that too?

Thanks!

Search Cleaning Bakelite. Recommends cleaning with soft bristle brush and several polish option to pick from.

I have painted mag covers with no ill effects. I will agree with you that the results can look fake. Other options would be using super fine sandpaper or emery cloth to remove the oxidation or a cleaner wax or polish to remove oxidation and brighten things up. To clean the name tag I have used baking soda, toothpaste or cleaner wax with good results.

Auto finish polish (not wax or shine coating, just oxide remover), then clear coat (Duplicolor works) Try it on a cap from a tractor to see if you like it. Jim
