Another cheap and effective way to sterilize a tank/ sprayer is to mix 1 quart of household ammonia per 100 gallons of water. Mix it up in tank well and let it sit in the system for 24 hrs then flush out with 2 more batches of plain water. Have always had good luck doing this.

Seems overkill to me.

Has there been anything other than water in the tank since the last time it was used?

I assume this is for drinking water?

If you plan on carrying more than 1/4 tank you will probably need to rinse it another ten times. Or you could give it a half second spray of silicone lube.

When I was working for a contractor putting in municipal water lines we used swimming pool chlorine.cant remember the amount but it was injected into the section we were decontaminating for 24 hrs then flushed out.

It will depend on what was has been in the tank before and what you want to use it for now. If the tank is an old herbicide or insecticide sprayer tank and you need to use it for hauling potable water for human drinking and cooking, I would replace the tank.

Benton Harbor Michigan has a lead pipe water crisis going on right now. So far, 90,000 cases of small bottled water has been distributed. What a novel idea you have there....Genius.

A white opaque tank like that with water in it will grow algae on the insides if it is in the sun. Algae likes to plug sprayer screens. Then we get to put on the clutzy rubber gloves to handle little nozzle screens soaked with farm chemical to clean them out. The big screen at the pump and or the valves is bigger and easier to handle. I have BTDT along with many other farmers.

Will the tank ever be squeaky clean, probably not, but will it hurt you if you drink the water probably not. Our water district had a very large rubber lined storage pond holding thousands of gallons of water. Somehow they found out someone took a wiz in the water. They drained all the water because of that. What we drink every day out of out house taps might surprise us. Stan

There is nothing else as frustrating
as that Fixerupper. Had the help
bring me a couple loads of water
that it took awhile to ever get the
sprayer cleaned back out. Spray a
100 yards and clean everything from
algae. This of course resulted in a
lot of foul language.

That reminds me of a news story in the Cincinnati area when some dude peed in a waterworks reservoir resulting in the whole reservoir being drained. Actually the urine from a healthy human is free of harmful content. In fact, when I served in a U S Army infantry unit, one of our medical instructors told us that urine was a safe, although desperate way, to cleanse a battlefield wound!

If joe continues on current path we all might be drinking out of the stock tank , and be thankful for it

Another thing that's handy thats's in the first pic is those yellow detergent bottles. They are great to use for hand washing and rinsing if you are out and away from a water supply.
