Put a few hours on an LA Case tractor, LPG version. Uncle had two of them and I helped him occasionally on the farm. He (uncle) told the story of trying out a new case model 800 tractor on his farm. Uncle was a practical guy so he had the dealer deliver the model 800 to his farm where he had been plowing and had a 4 bottom plow that he left in the ground and had unhooked his LA tractor. Told the dealer to hook up to the plow and show him what the 800 could do. Said the dealer gleefully hooked up with the 800 but it would not budge the plow. Dealer told uncle that he would bring out a 900 model to demonstrate, which my uncle later traded an LA for. Uncle had always claimed the LPG LA tractors had more power than a gas model. Will always remember that story.

They were bigger then an R and bigger then a WD-9. Only tractor that could match them to start with was the Oliver 99.

One of my uncles bought an LA and farmed with it for a few years in the early fifties. Then he got into land clearing and breaking. Used the LA to pull a bush breaking plow after the cat had cleared the bush. A big heavy tractor and likely pretty thirsty for gas.

ya that 800 would would have no show against the LA. little 267 cid engine compared to the 403 cid with a 6 inch stroke. the 900 would be a bit stronger. the only ih tractor that would compete with the LA is the WD40 . i have out pulled the case 500's in the tractor pulls with my WD40.

They are workhorses for sure.
Used one on a pull type dirt pan enlarging my pond.
Also pulled a big disc with it.
It was not bad on gas pulling the dirt pan.
Only sucked gas when loading it.
On the disc, it kept us busy hauling gas.
Also used an LAE engine pulling my sawmill.
Great constant power.

i found case LA 51hp drawbar, oliver 99 52hp drawbar and john deere R 35 hp. on drawbar. ih wd40 37 h.p. so ya she is right up there.

Hahaha. The R was 45 hp not 34. Thats less then a D. I get my stuff at the actual Nebraska test website that has the original final report scanned. Also the Case LA was tested under three different fuels. Make sure you get the right one. My was the gas result.

was wondering... do these tractors come with a hand crank? nothing here. i see even these beasts are 6 volt starters and thats a lot of engine to crank.

One of my favorite tractors. My teenage son restored this one last year, he had it disassembled to the very last nut.

Yes, they had a hand crank. Actually, not that hard to flip over. My dad rescued 2 of them from being scrapped, they sure ran nice. I had a 55 MH at the time, 382 CID engine, pretty even match with the LA in weight and power, but I found the Massey a bit easier to operate. Good engines, both.

Massey Harris 55 tested at 57 hp on the drawbar....was advertised by MH as the most powerful tractor on wheels for a few years at least!

I have wondered about that myself.
The LA had a lot more torque.
The 101 SR had good smooth 6 cylinder power.
I would say they were about the same on the sawmill.
