Just for the fun of it

Once a year I work on a college friend's driveway. Part if his driveway is a RR bed for the interurban that ran for Terre Haute to Indy
He
drives in the same tracks creating 2 valleys that trap water and creates potholes.

So I used 7 ft old 10 inch mobile home Ibeam.

I call my experiment a bust. It makes a mess when I turn around leavings rock on road. Then if I have enough loose rock the mower wheels spin as you can see in the pic.

Not my idea of the best way to level a driveway.

May think of making it small but will still create a mess turning. I'll need a way to lift Ibeam to turn around.

If you have a way to lift Ibeam please post pic

Remove the block from the drag once you get everything loosened up. But move it to the back of the mower for better traction, also make a set of chains for the rear tires from car chains.

This was made for friend. Yes I made for 4 blocks. Traction is the problem my friend will have too.
Just a bad idea in my opinion. Loosen gravel and no traction.

I hate to say it, but forget the lawn mower and I-beam drag idea. You need a 3 point blade on a tractor, or better yet, a hydraulic pull behind box blade. If you don't have the equipment, perhaps you or your college buddy knows somebody that does.
If you was just using a harrow section, or an old set of metal box springs to fill in a pot hole or two, your idea would maybe work. But your trying to gouge and move to much rock with no way to raise and empty out to turn around. With a 3 point blade, or box blade, you could raise, turn around, lower, and drag pile back the other way. And even gradually raise so your not leaving a pile at all.

Good morning: From reading all the posts here, it seems that you need a tractor big enough so that the pulling effort will not be enough to make the tractor wheels slip. (I am happy with my blacktop drive!)

Change the chain from being centered to three or four links offset so it pulls the beam just a bit crooked. Then when you turn the proper direction you will not scatter as many rocks to the outside. You are limited to turning only one way all the time though. You will figure it out. Traction wise you need a heavier horse with bar tread tires or at least a heavier horse.

I have all the toys, a box scraper, front loader and back blade but the old yard drag I made out of a couple heavy angle irons still gets the most use for smoothing out the yard rock.

A couple ways to lift beam. 1 put a set of wheels on each end with a lever you reach back and pull down to lift the beam or 2 hang the beam from a 3pt blade with short chain then lift blade to lift beam and then let back down some to let beam drag. Could also be angled that way for either direction.

Guys,
I was making this for friend that has no tractors.

Some of you don't know I have 5 tractors, 3 with loaders.
2 with 3pts.

Have many ways to repair driveways.

The I beam is off set. You can't tell because I was turning around.

Bad idea to use mower. that simple

I made one with an old feeder house chain. Was wide enough to cut it in half. Bolt the half pieces together in the center. Suspend it about 6from a 3 point frame. Use a hydraulic center link. Works well can raise either or both ends. Will smooth out the gravel very well. No problems on the ends.

Use what you have When you get near the end fasten the chain shorter and turn around. then fasten the chain out long again

Make a little frame like a log arch, running on used lawn mower
tires in the rear. Lift and lower the beam with an old tractor lift
arm or even a used boat winch when turning. Once the beam is
lifted, even slightly, it will add weight for traction. Git 'er done!

P.S. the wheels at the rear also add some length which helps
keep the ground more level when going over bumps and holes.

Nothing works better for me than having a blade or rake attached to front bucket

You can see perfectly, and the best part, down pressure.

If your friend had a real garden tractor,......I

Dad bought a new Cub Cadet 125 back in 1970+/-.

He made a belly grader blade out of 4x4 angle iron. It utilized the stock deck lifting mechanism. And the hinge point was at the rear axle. When grading the drive you could put enough down pressure on the deck lift handle to cut into virgin dirt. Worked great.

Friend has the same mower I have. That's why I used mower to test with.
Pulling something isn't my idea of what works best. PERIOD.
