1972 ford 3400

Just bought a ford 3400 industrial gasser tractor few days ago. Paint and
sheet metal excellent. Engine has some stain but not bad. Bought it to resurrect an old 4000 RC until the mechanic called within a day or two and said that 4000's engine was no good due to water in the oil. Now I guess that I'll work on the 3400. Engine has gas in crankcase so it may be bad as well. Tractor has a 4 spd tranny w/ torque converter reversing. Haven't had much opportunity for on site research due to wife's ALS disease but the few minutes I did have to go to the farm I noticed that I didn't see a clutch pedal. I've driven and operated tractors for almost 60 yrs of foreign and domestic origins but I've never seen or heard of this. The T-C is manual. What little info I found came from some of you fella's. I think I understand the codes. C5021F 2C10B Does anyone know about this type of transmission and how it operates ? I would appreciate any info that any of you may have.

the C5021F unit number breaks down to a -

C50 - 3500 industrial 1965-1972
2 - Gas engine
1 - no PTO
F - 4x4 torque converter auto reversing

2C10B is a build date of March 10,1972 B shift

this transmission is much like your car, no clutch pedal, engine is powering a pump and the converter. Forward and reverse are a shuttle valve controlled by the hand lever to change the path of the oil. I'm sure one of the other guys can give a more graceful explanation of how it works

Welcome to the forum! My 4500 had the same transmission I think.
Select the speed you want with the "gear shifter", lift the handle
out of the neutral cradle on the dash, push it up to go forward and
step on the gas pedal. (or pull the throttle lever)
Pull the handle down for reverse and step on the gas to go in reverse.
Tractor should be idled down and stopped before shifting directions.
Great for loader work and such before hydro-stat was a thing.
I never had any trouble with mine, but admittedly, I didn't own it long.

JoeM, the info that you posted is way more than I had a few minutes ago. Thanks. Now your answer raises a question for me , will the shifter move w/o the engine running ? I bought it while loaded on a trailer and when it was delivered we rolled it off trailer and inside the tool shed. I looked at it trying to figure the T-C lever out and tried shifting it but feared bending or breaking something. Tractor was at NH dealer for repairs on the engine but they didn't accomplish much and during that time the owner passed away suddenly so I couldn't get any questions answered due to the circumstances. Thanks again. Much appreciated.

I've got the remains of a 1975 Airport tug tractor. It had the same set up.
I drove it, but it only went forwards. I understand that there is a linkage
inside the bell housing that must have came apart. I don't think it should be hard to
shift at all.
