Case 1030- out of Fuel...

Ok I messed up! Gauge shows fuel but it ran out of fuel- so I need a new sending unit but for now...Im a bit lost. I havent ran down the batteries yet; I filled both filters with fuel and still can not get the little primer pump to build pressure; there's another filter upfront by the pump thats very hard to get to; im trying to put air in the tank to help bleed fuel in the filters...any ideas please? Thanks

I bought a second fuel cap and drilled a hole in the cap and put a air sniffer valve into it. I then put a little amount of air into the tank (only 1 or 2 pounds) then open the bleeder sc r ews and bleed each filter. Then take the fuel cap off and the tractor has always started

I have found after I have tried to bleed the lines with the primer pump, that the tractor might start and run for a few seconds, then quit again. But if I keep pumping the primer once it fires up, it will keep running. I have also had good luck just bleeding the lines, then hook a chain on the front and have another tractor pull the dead tractor till it starts

Are you sure it was out of fuel?

Maybe the lift pump is bad. Have you tried bumping the engine through one turn to get the pump off the high side of the cam lobe?

Or take the pump off and operate it by hand to be sure it will pump.

Air pressure to the tank works and having the tank full helps too. Once the first two filters are bled the third will on its own. It does take some time if it's been run really dry. The hand pumps take a lot of pumping, when your real tired of it your just getting started.

ok and thanks- i put the pump in new about 5 yrs ago when I ran it out of fuel- still I ordered another one today but will be 3-4 days when it comes. I have 10 gal in it - the fuel pumps in town are out of order for 2 weeks; will keep trying- thanks!

them cases are a bear to bleed. i run the old 900 out on the field a few days ago, guess not used to those high comsumption cases, ha ha. i had to take and air tank out there and pressure the air tank with a rag around the fill cap. it worked. problem is that last high filter in the front.

MY 930 primer pump gasket was bad. Not available from dealer. Found one that works at big truck parts dept. Just changed filters and let mother nature refill 1st filter over night. 2nd filter took 100 pumps to get fuel out of bleed hole.

Just went thru this with my 1490 because the fuel gauge doesn't work. Get the battery on a charger. Fill the tank. Forget the hand pump, it's horseshit. You can take an inner tube with a valve and wrap around gas filler spout, duct tape or zip tie and shoot a few pounds of air in there. Next, and this is key!!!!!, unhook the line from the handpump into the tank, (make sure it's not the return line) and blow it out with air, blow back into tank because when you run her dry, crap gets sucked into the line and clogs it. loosen injector pump bleed screw and crank the engine until fuel shoots out. Now loosen a couple of the injector lines up top, (Not the return lines) pick the easy ones and really loosen them up. Now crank the engine until fuel is pouring out. You will see bubbles of air. Have someone stand by with a can of starting fluid and when she starts to pop and you see a bit of smoke out the exhaust have them give her a shot with air filter removed. It will start running and get stronger, have them keep shooting fluid until it runs only on diesel and then snug up the loose injector lines. I am going to stress again that the key is to blow back into the tank from the very start and clear the line otherwise you will never get enough fuel to start, getting fuel is easy, getting enough to start is critical, it should be a fairly strong stream from whatever line you have open. Don't be afraid to crack lines open and crank that engine continuously to get fuel flowing. A word of caution on the injector pump bleed screw, it can go flying and get lost so don't make it too loose.

Like already said just bleed the filters. I have used ether to keep them running for a minute by just sniffing it as the engine starts to die then it picks up the ether again it will probably pick up the fuel in one or 2 sessions of that.
when you get to the fuel gage shor the live wire to ground while watching the gage if it moves back and forth the gage is good. Then with an OHM meter I move the sender while watching the meter again if the meter needle moves the sender is good now you will have to find the bad ground location. As the live wire moved the gage earlier so that part is good.

Those fuel tanks are flat and wide with the fuel outlet far to one side (right side?). On slopes the fuel can run from one side of the tank to the other. On steep side hills you may need to keep extra fuel in the tank for when the fuel outlet is on the high side of the tank.

(quoted from post at 10:43:57 10/21/21) my pump is not making any pressure.
Had trouble with the primer pump on ours many times when changing filters--when I rebuilt the engine, I took the hand pump out of the line entirely and never failed to start again--it will gravity to the injector pump--then just crack the lines open on the top and bleed there

To let everyone know I did get it running this evening- thank God:) I went to town and bought a few things and spent 2 hrs building a fuel cap with a Schrader air valve in the center; worked fine but took 4 tanks of air to get fuel to the pump; thanks for all the help guys! BJM
