What is the good and the bad about an Allis Chalmers 5040? Is this one built by FIAT? What is parts availability?

I have one,dad bought it new in 77 other the minor repairs and a new start it has been a good little tractor. It has been retired to raking hay now and hauling fire wood.As far as parts go anything that I did need I got after market.the tractor was built in Romania it does have a fiat engine in it.

Well, sort of...... It's a Fiat design, but the 5040 was built, I believe, in Romania, under license from Fiat. I was around them when they were new, as I worked at an AC dealer. The only trouble back then was the starter. I think it was a Morelli? A Bosch replacement solved that problem.

Same tractor as the Long 445 and Oliver 1265,parts interchangeable.Tough little tractors, about the easiest older tractor to find parts for around, ebay is full of parts and several after market parts sellers around. If its an 8 speed its like the Long 460.

The owner says the PTO must be engaged before starting the tractor. What does that point to? A clutch issue, PTO brake issue, something else?

Beware- this is an old memory! As I recall, all of the Fiat designed and/or built drive trains AC used employed a similar set up. That being a two part engine clutch, the PTO clutch part being controlled by a hand lever. The drill was- pull the clutch lever, then engage the PTO gear shift, then release the clutch lever. I don't remember where, or how many safety switches were involved. That may be his issue. I do remember it seems like you seldom could get the PTO shifter engaged without grinding it in. I had a 6060, which was a totally different tractor, but it was a Fiat drive train, with the same general design. The PTO operation was archaic and miserable. Enough to encourage me to get rid of it.

I had the Long 445 which is basically the same tractor, that was 30-31 years ago and it was trouble from day one with me. First off, the lift quit working and had to have it repaired, then the crank broke, took sometime to round up the parts, I remember it took over 6 months to get a set of rings and head gasket for it. Then there was the pto issue as you just described with the AC. Before and after I had engine rebuilt when temps got in the 50s and lower it would not crank without starting fluid. I may have had a lemon but thats what I have to say about the Fiat engine. My uncle had a Long 350 or 360 about this same time, his was the same way, starter fluid to crank it or you could not crank it.

I have the 445 long which others say is the same and have worked with another 445 and a 350 long in the past.my experience is the engine is like the energizer bunny-it just keeps going and going and going.absolutely no problems with the engine after many thousands of hours.the pto system is not real operator friendly but is as good as any .only problem I have had is leaking o-rings from the rock shaft (3pt)and the alternator but my tractor is as close to wore out as they get.the 350 and 445 I worked with in the past were used as pto powered irrigation pump tractors and would run 24/7 for weeks at a time only shutdown to check levels and refuel and they both had probably 7-8000 hrs apiece on them.ricks ag parts can supply you with almost anything you need and answer about any questions for these tractors

Hey Bob,

You said it right the first time too. Only time you need to explain it is for the guys that never seen or heard of one,
