Making Sure Gaskets Seal (also in IH forum)

When you had the cover off, did you flatten the surface, hammer the back side of each bolt hole back flat or even a little past so the bolt puts pressure on the entire surface instead of just at the bolt location?

And thoroughly clean the block surface?

If the surface is rough or pitted, some automotive silicone will help seal the low spots.

If the new gasket is still good it can be reused. If it crushed and tore at the bolt holes it will need to be replaced. Or try it with just silicone!

who is doing this job? if a mechanic or mechanically inclined guy did it, it wont be leaking with new cover and gasket. yes you need a sealer.

If I may add to this. When using silicon/rtv, assemble the parts finger tight then allow the sealant to cure overnight. After curing tighten to specs.
