This one does run, was used over here in WW1 and has the War Department marking.

To see it started with a crowbar in a hole in the fly wheel and being barred over is an awesome sight. I often wonder what would happen if she fired and he did not get the bar out in time.

There was an old-timer around here with a Cat 60 that started the same way. I think the bar had a spring to push it out. Watched him start it once, didn't seem too difficult.

SMS is right the hole is fixed where it throws the bar out once the thing turns. Interesting thing my Granddad showed me on one that he had. Said he always laid something over the hole when he parked it or the next morning frost, rain and sometimes ice would fill the hole. Lots of patience but he would turn and get the thing just riong and give it that quick jerk and it would fire right off.

I don't have a crawler but I do have one of the engines. Mine is a 45. Actually the same engines were used in the Holt combines and that's where mine came from as can be told by the crankshaft extensions. Yes they start with a bar and one must be mindful to retard the timing and set the impulse coupling.

That really is amazing. We had a Caterpillar 60 at our pull event this past summer, they were built from '25 to '31 according to the link below. It belongs to a friend of one of our members. They put on a little mock road building demo on an adjacent field, the visitors liked it. This photo is from the noon hour parade of power towing a vintage earth mover/scraper.

Caterpillar 60 Information ....

Wow I was driving truck in the backwoods about twenty years ago and saw one just like it sitting next to the road in western KY. Now I wish I would have stopped and tried to buy it. My luck it would sell for scrap price now.
