Sometime during the week the farmer dug one row of potatoes in our field

He rents the land from us

Larry. All of the photos are great but my favorite is # 4. Thank you for the post. What beautiful country side you have at the get away home. Must be tempting not to live there full time. It wouldnt be for me. Lol. Wingnut

Just curious Larry as to when you planted the pattypan squash. Ours has been gone for about 3 weeks. We have been very dry, and I know that has not helped. We did not not get turnips up either after planting them twice right before some showers.

I believe it was late june,,almost july,,The potatoes were all up,,and their was some blank space,so I Kicked a spot dropped two seeds,,covered them with my foot,,,and lightly compressed the spot with my foot.No weeding, watering,,nothing

I did not find those pattypan squash to my liking so they are off my list... In my hood turnips would still be 20 days are so out...

Very vice larry . I gotta warn you though barney may issue a citation on that mower vegetable carrier , exposed pto shaft and drive shaft on the digger and open drive chain

We finished lifting potatoes yesterday, we work very slowly using our Johnson Major harvester. It has an elevator to load directly onto a trailer but we just move forward and stop, picking the potatoes off the sorting table and putting them in sacks. Sure beats lifting them with the two row lifter and picking them off the soil.

We had a fair bit of slug damage in some, so left a few in the field but we had some big potatoes this year.

These were taken a couple of years ago when we had a couple of helpers but this year it has been just Ann and me.

We planted some about the same time, and they did fairly well. We have been very dry and hot most of the summer, and will have temps up in the 80s this week after today. That plus an early crop of fall worms finished them off. We planted a few more seed in early August but got nothing from them.
They began blooming but did not get enough moisture to produce.

Patty pans are a favorite here. I like to slice them into 3/8 pieces tossing in olive oil and roasting on a cookie sheet with some onions, salt, and pepper. Use a 400 degree oven a half hour or so till they get a little brown.

Nice spuds dug by old technology. I just planted 1 lb of 3 different varieties and some baby potatoes left from last year. I just get down on my knees and dig them with a small garden shovel. I've got the soil to a point it is fairly loose and really easy to dig AND I usually don't poke holes through so many with a potato fork. I plant Yukon Golds, ?????, and for the first time German Butterballs. The Butterballs were really big and grew far away from the plant than my other potatoes, so I nicked a few and slice the ends off some. Home grown potatoes seem to taste better than store b ought. One farmer in a potato growing area said most growers grew potatoes for their own use in a garden. OOPS I didn't take any pics of the bigger potatoes.

As a kid I used to hate the digger. We used to pick up the spuds to make a little spending money. After we picked up all the spuds from the first pass the farmer always made a second pass.
