Good morning! I took the genny and regulator and mounting brackets off this morning and shined up all contact points and put it back together. When I started it, the needle on the guage jumped froma slight charge to a slight discharge for a few seconds and then settled at the center( no charge). I hooked a jump wire on battery ground and touched the field terminal and no charge. That tells me the genny isn't working, correct? There is a place about an hour away that still works on gennys, so I'll take it there and have it checked out. Can they check the regulator also or if I get it back and it still doesn't charge, just replace it?? Thanks for the help, I'm a dunce at electrical stuff. Chris

Thanks for the feedback. YES if the wiring is correct and intact ?? if you dead ground the GennYs FLD post that essentially by passes the VRs regulation function and places the genny in high max charge, so if all the rest is okay ?? but no charge, the genny may well be badddddddddd. The Motor Test in my Troubleshooting Procedure is another way to test a genny and if it passes BOTH tests it should charge.

YES a shop can test VR and genny

NOTE my friend JMOR asked a good question WHY ARE THERE TWO WIRES on the gennys ARM post ?? The gennys ARM wires to the GEN/ARM on the VR,,,,,,,,FLD on genny to FLD on VR,,,,,,,BAT on VR up to ammeter, and BOTH need good grounds. SURE ITS WIRED RIGHT???

It was that way when I got it. Someone added oil pressure and amp guages to go along with the idiot lights. The guage has been working as it should until recently.

Typically loads are fed off the Load (NOT battery/starter) side of the ammeter or else the BAT terminal on VR which is essentially the same or the LOAD terminal on a VR if it has one. The gennys ARM is only hot when its spinning and if alls well at sufficient RPM the VR's internal cutout relay will close to connect BAT and ARM together.

Clear as mud Im sure lol

If that's an original or a very old regulator, do your best to keep it.

The new ones are not near the quality of the originals.

AMEN to that Steve. So many new ones fail out of the box. If one had an old stock Delco that's the best
