Beautiful old barn.

I wonder if the steel roofing would have
had more staying-power, if the old
wooden shingles had been removed before it was installed.

Any idea what the tall upper story was used for? In good corn years we would fill the center aisles with ear corn, but had to shell it by mid-spring.

The tall part is the headhouse for the inside bucket elevator as was mentioned. The longer the crib the taller the headhouse needs to be to get enough slope on the spout going out to the far corners of the crib. The overhead bins could hold about 5000 bushels of oats in a crib like this. Heavy grain like corn or soybeans would be too much weight for the structure if the bins were filled to the top.

My neighbor, my dad and I tore down a crib like this board by board in ten days. Nails cleaned up, lumber stacked. No wonder I am so stiff and worn out today!
