Show questions

I was just wondering if shows you go to are helpers in short supply. The two shows we go to the one is really short on people wanting to help the one we went to yesterday wasn't too bad. I don't mind jumping in and helping and getting the kids to help thay need to to learn. But then we end up missing other parts of the show we wanted to see.

It isn't just shows. Everywhere is short people
For whatever reason, people have gone super lazy. Nobody wants to do a thing!

I needed a helper for doing some painting. $25 cash, no takers. Just amazing.

YES! We went to White Pine for the first time this year and noticed they had a fantastic collection of very old, complete, what appeared to be usable printing equipment set up, but not operating. They also had a nice water wheel at the millhouse with the wheel spinning and mill doors open, but no one to man the mills.
At Forest City we struggle to get manpower. The food booths have been outsourced and this year they had no one selling souvenirs so none were ordered. There are a handful of dedicated members that are able to build new and move in existing historical buildings that get random displays set in them as static display.
At Junkshow we have a small core group that does the necessary upkeep even though we promote a monthly work weekend with meals and meeting. For our show there are several chairs and members that pull an all day shift. My parking shuttle crew was mostly manned by nonmembers because of numerous excuses. My B team young guys ,17-20, ran hard and the local implement parts runner , all non members, were our savior. A local K of C has done our parking in the past, but only showed up with 8 guys so we found members to aid them. Our main kitchen was out sourced about 6 years ago because there are no old farm ladies left out there to put out a hardy meal. I manage to get a gang of early riser construction workers and ex farm kid to do our breakfast and we have fun doing it. Our print shop, rope machine, flour mill, steam engines and boiler are manned by a skeleton crew that run all day.

One local show wasn't even held this year in the sense that it's always been because of lack of help. There was a stripped down show this year at the grounds. They turned it over to two other local clubs in the form if free use of the grounds. We had other plans that weekend, so we couldn't make it, but whatever there was to it, went on.

would submit that many people are struggling to find their way in the modern world. A house costs a quarter of a million dollars, a car costs $40,000. Taxes and insurances (auto, homeowner's, health) can easily get over $20,000/year. Your $25 cash should get you an hour's worth of help, no more. I don't call it lazy. I call it entrepreneurial.

You complain about lack of help, then say,
'We had other plans that weekend.'

Someone else pointed out the reality of houses costing $250,000 to $500,000 now, and those are not in the pricey areas.. I live in the cheap part of the neighborhood and could sell my house for about $300,000 by the middle of next week because there are so many buyers with money out there.

All I will add is that last evening two of us ate at Arby's and your $25 would not have paid for the meal. The bill for the sandwiches and fries was nearly $30.

Define complain. Randy is merely answering the original
question. If he had other plans he had other plans. Both my
wagon drivers and breakfast help were a rotating cast due to
work, weddings, anniversaries, and old age. I cant fault them
for any of that.

Maybe I am missing something or just ignorant I thought shows are on a volunteer basis at least the ones I go to so I'm not sure what money has to do with it.

t's so hard to make a living nowadays that people don't have time to volunteer. They got's to get paid. This isn't the 60's and 70's when union workers spent their spare time helping others. Ask about it at any volunteer firefighter's meeting.

The wife has to come first once in a while. She was the paid speaker at a tomato festival in Indiana that weekend. With all the
stuff she does for me, I'm not ashamed that I went there with her instead of staying home and going to yet another tractor show
this year. We've been so many shows and drives this year that she has participated in as well, I make no apologies for making a
weekend all about her. I don't suffer from any dilutions that the show that did go on was any worse because we weren't there. She
was asked to speak at the festival two months before we found out that that show had been turned over to our club and another one.
We've hauled more tractors to more shows and rides this year than I ever really want to do again.

rest my case.

I agree. I think Im missing something as well. Growing up the neighborhood helped each other out on planting, harvest, chores, milking, and building projects. People dont have more or less time now. Thats bunk! There are 24 hours in a day and 7 days in a week. Thats it. The sense of community and comradery are different then they used to be. People are lazy! People make good money! Dont kid yourself about getting paid. Work a show and see how many side by sides are drug in behind big dollar campers. Its crazy. The private school in the town of Junkshow has had a food stand at the show for the last 40 years. They did a good job, probably made good money, and never complained. This year they stepped away from their stand because they couldnt find help. A week after the show the sign in front of the school says buy a raffle ticket. $20,000 grand prize. The point is they see it easier to throw money at it then work a food stand and get dirty. Probably had golf, a birthday, grocery shopping and a football game to watch vs working a shoddy food stand and a stinky steam show and put up with the public.
Maybe Im just bitter because this is my 24th day of volunteering for 2 different shows in the last 6 weeks and after seeing how 1/10 of the public appreciates the effort I might be a bit passionate about this topic because its fresh in my mind. Dont get me wrong. Theres 9/10 of the public that appreciate and enjoy what we put forth. We just dont hear them like the idiots.

I shouldnt complain. Shows are my hobby, on my terms, by my schedule. The question was asked and today Im climbing on the soap box!

unk you say? Practically everyone I know has a full-time job and a couple side hustles just to try to make ends meet.

I'm gonna use social media to blame social media. People are just addicted to being on it and won't rub the darkness out of their
eyes and go back out in the world to do anything. That's how addiction works.

Why chance running in to anybody who might try to have a conversation about something they don't agree with when they can get warm
hugs and pats on the back for repeating what others on their chosen media site are repeating too?

Bunk! Heres a for instance. There are steam show junkies
that show up at Junkshow 2 weeks ahead of the show to get a
front row camping spot. In this instance one of the ring
leaders, who is retired and not working a side hustle to make
ends meet I might add, has enough ambition to hook up the
trailer to the camper and load the side by side to get here
early. Once here the gang doesnt lift a finger to help set up or
kitchen. No ticket booth shift or exhibit help. The best I got out
of him this year is 1 three hour shift driver a brand new NH w/
AC in the cab on the people shuttle in the parking lot. So Im
calling BUNK! I understand that the membership are
exhibitors and without exhibits we wouldnt need food booths,
but lately weve had more help from locals and non members
then our own.

Ozlander, not very nice of you to call an observation a complaint.
