todays project. checked this 660 out. fuel at sediment bowl to pump was shut off, very bad deal! i never advise of that on a diesel engine. been caught already a few times by this. this causes the pumps to rust and get water in them. this one is screwed. running out of 660 pumps... had to rob one off my working tractor. least i did not have to tear into the engine. left it soaking with snake oil. tractor sat for around 20 years. swapped pumps out and she is a runner. so here is the no cab 660 now. went for a tour around the field. another one saved from the scrapper.

Did a 660 have some sort of planetary reduction in the final drive or axle housing?
The ring of several bolts on the end of the axle got me to wondering?

you are correct. has planetaries in the rear hubs. has the same 282 engine as the 560, just it is speeded up to 2400 rpm from 1800 in the 560. quite power full unit, compares to the 830 john deere and 930 case back then, when u work with these 660's and get on a 560 they are a real dog. plus it is 2 higher as you see the cast spacer under the rad. has 34 rear tires , 560 has 30 was the biggest tractor in its day. this one is first year out 1959. they made them till 1963. then the 806 took over.

Sounds like it went pretty easy for a tractor that sat outside for 20 years. Glad you got it up and running. It looks a heck of a lot better without the cab.

Good save! We had one growing up. Good solid work horse. Pulled hard. Always enjoyed running it and it's sound when working. Being a wheatland with that long hood it took 40 acres to turn around.

Also had a 560. Did not know they were the same engine. Also did not know it had planetary rear end. Must be why it pulled so good.

Ours had a hydraulic assist power steering on the steering arm. It always leaked shortly after every rebuild of the cylinder. Finally just made it armstrong

the 560 came out in 58 and these came out in 59. it is basically built from the 560. lots of parts are the same. has taller rad , taller oil bath air cleaner, bigger steering wheel , same steering box, platform is higher. same tin work. i am presuming the trans. gears are the same. just with the reduction at the rear wheels the engine is speeded up. these tractors put out around the 85 h. p. mark. the 560 is about 20 h. p. less. plus less that 7000 660's built so not a lot around anymore.

they actually turn pretty good for this size of tractor, just slow down at the headlands and lift implement and as good as it gets. with power steering on them its a pleasure to drive them. i had p.s. on my other one for a while then that ram started leaking so took if off.

i just hate them cabs. big ugly rattle trap box stuck on there, does nothing for the tractor looks. ya i kinda lucked out here. just the injection pump.
