fan pull air from evaporator and it also pulls condensation off coils. The condensation is sprayed all over the inside of AC.

Add fine dust parts and you have a place for black mold. I use bleach and the dirt disappears.

Conditioner fan gets dirty to. The design caused dirt to get the the fan motor burning and locked up the motor. I took motor apart, spun the rotorit in lathe, used 600g energy cloth and put a mirror finish on shaft.

I put AC on its side and used water to clean dirt from conditioner and styrofoam. Bleach turned the styrofoam white. Which makes me think some of what looks like dirt is black mold.

I used white lub and a valve stem umbrella to cover the motor bushing and a flat rubber washer to hold umbrella in place. Anything to keep dirt away from bushing is better than nothing.

There's no easy way to clean a windows

AC. You have to take it apart and sanitize it annually. You are breathing the air that comes in contact with the dirt inside. Don't think the filter will remove all the dirt and dust.

To keep bugs and dust away from condenser I cover unit with aluminum window screen.

If you had to pay someone to do this work you better buy a new one.

Great post George. And to keep it tractor-related, some folks hang a window a/c from their tractor cab. *lol*

Only one time did one of our window units ever get that bad, but not from black mold. The skeeters were SO bad that year that they went into the a/c (brand new unit!), got chopped by the fan, and that blood attracted more skeeters. Before long, we had a putrid, rotting corpse in the a/c, not to mention the hundreds of skeeters that found their way THROUGH the darned thing!

I called Electrolux (Frigidaire a/c) and complained, and they reimbursed the cost. Never bought another Electrolux product since! But have discovered that skeeters can get through ALL of the newer a/c units these days. Not having charge ports means they are meant to be throw-away units. Sad. But, this small house just doesn't need more than one or two 5,000 BTU units. This year we needed 2. Hottest and driest Summer on record for here. ....And now we're at a balmy 42 degrees. *lol*

That's the best reason I use window
screen. Baked on Bug juice is hard to
remove from condenser.

BTY I worked on AC in pole barn where I
keep my Kubota an terramite.
Before I got the Kubota I thought of many
ways to make a cab with AC. The dust and
grass clippings would be a big problem.

I was expecting to get mine out of the building today but had a customer need some work done. My shop I have to struggle to just walk though it and I've had to clear a path wide enough to get the tractor in there.

I'm sure my AC needs a little maintenance but I don't think the crud is responsible for working or not working lately. I think most likely it has something to do with the electronics in it. If it were located in a window I would have had it out already but is's cut through the wall above my head. As big as it is I can't get it out by myself without the front loader.

Most big units slide out of the case and it's not a one person job. A loader will help.
