Hydraulic oil leak on a 444 Massey Harris

I had hydraulic oil getting in to the gas engine on a 444 Massey Harris. I took the pump out and put a new shaft seal in it. Everything was good for awhile and then oil was getting in to the oil pan again. About the only way to have that happen is the seal. Does that sound right. There is a tube coming from the hyd tank to the engine, but I believe that is a vent, unless there is some way it is sucking through that. I'd appreciate any opinions. Thanks

When you pull the pump again carefully inspect the shaft. Most likely a groove has worn in the shaft where the seal rides, causing it to wipe out the seal quickly.

What may work for you is a device called a "speedi sleeve" that is a thin sleeve that adheres to the shaft and provides a smooth surface for the seal to ride on.

A sudden rush of return oil to the tank
could cause oil to carry over through the
vent. If irc the return line enters mid
tank. My dads 33 had this issue, we
relocated the return higher in the tank
and also rerouted the vent to a catch can.
Every few days empty the catch can back in
the tank.
This was occurring with the fast drop of a
single acting cylinder on a haybine.
Or it could be new seal on a poor shaft.
A temporary catch can may help you
troubleshoot.
