Oliver tractors

SV. Thanks for the post. A lot of good reading of some interesting topics within the link. Wingnut

The marketing department at Oliver had a campaign in the 1960's to market Oliver plows as working well with any color tractor. In about 1966 the factory at Charles City painted two 1850's purple to go with their marketing campaign to sell more plows. It is thought these two tractors went to some Iowa county fairs, the Farm Progress Show and the Iowa State Fair. Legend has it the tractors were sent back to the factory and never sold. The paint codes were supposedly sent to some regional Oliver branch houses, where some dealers could access them if they wanted to have a purple tractor on the lot. The tractor below may be a recreation ( or is it ? ) of the original purple Oliver. This picture from from a tractor show in Penfield several years ago. There is one other recreation of a purple Oliver in Michigan.

I am a Ford guy, but at the first tractor pull that I competed in I saw my first Oliver. I was taken with the color scheme, the styling, and the smooth running six cylinder, and not too long later I bought one. I haven't finished it but it has been in running order for many years. I also joined the Oliver Hart Parr Collectors assoc. and have been enjoying the Oliver Collector mag. I see Oliver as being a leader in many areas of tractor development.

There was only one of those. Duane Star worked on that project. We were talking about it with him at Oakley two weeks ago. He even told me the name of the body shop where they took it to have it painted. The color was from a Lincoln Continental I believe it was. He said when they were done with it, they sanded it back to bare metal and repainted it green. There's no record of the serial number of it. Chris Losey of Springport Michigan has one painted up. He had it at the National Show in Oakley. Even then, I didn't read anything he had on it, so I'm not sure if it's a reproduction of the purple 1850 or if it's pink to humor his daughter.

They look like nice tractors . Too bad mergers got em then

It's almost the same as the one in the ad pictured above.
Wonder if the film they used at the time couldn't get the purple right?
They had to use a fire engine green to get the proper yellow on the Nash Bridges Cuda because of the film they were using.
