And why do they ned to straddle 4 rows of anything. We dig beats and taters with 60 inch tread width. And they did in CO when I was there . This was 30 years ago now though.
 
Just easier . The old 4 row harvesters pulled offset and had a gauge wheel that ran in between the 3rd and 4th row so you can only dig 8 rows when you straddle 4 you can dig 12 at a time throwing 4 on in on each side and no gauge wheel to worry about when you go down the road . We plant in beds so can only dig 12 rows . Guys that plant rows can throw 6 rows on each side so they can harvest 16 at a time
