Got a ticket

Spent the morning installing a fence 50 miles north of us. Had been texting a guy about a Cub he had for sale 90 miles south east of us. Said he had a sale pending. Just about the time we got home he texted and said sale fell through. Out of one truck into the other. Poor little Cub has a stuck motor, but had a ton of new parts. On the way home we got pulled over and got a ticket for a burnt out head light. 72 hours to fix and go to police station. Lucky it was just in the next town down the road.

Grill screen, muffler, and air breather cap are in the truck. Front tires and rims are new. Maybe this motor will un- stick....... Poor guy, was his uncle's tractor, had sat for years. This guy got it , cleaned gas tank, rewired it, rebuilt carb, bought new sediment bowl, switches, radiator cap, distributor cap, rotor, points, plugs, wires....... Then decided to see if motor would turn??? Nope. It's stuck. He gave up and sold it.

If you need more checkout Weiman Auction . 28-29 cubs on online only auction today and more attachments than you can haul on one load.

suprised you got away with the tractor tiedown. normally it has to always be 4 point tiedown, i got stop delivering large ztr and found that out.

ooks like strap thru each of 4 wheels. perhaps "independent strap at each of 4 wheels, vs loop thru 2?

I am surprised you got a ticket for burnt out headlight. Around here if a cop gave a ticket and not a warning for that he would be in court. No judge that I have ever heard about would allow a ticket for something that could have happened on the way home.

To me that is the same as if you have an accident fender bender and takes out a light or 2 they have to give you 30 days to fix, and if it goes through our insurance then you can drive till they settle with you or they fix it.

Looks like a 4-point tiedown to me.

The 4-for-$7 Harbor Freight straps are probably a little light for the job, but the highway patrol officer that pulled him over wasn't looking for DOT violations anyway, nor could he enforce them if he wanted to. His job is to look for speeding, running stop signs and red lights, lights out, erratic driving, etc..

That auction has at least that many late model John Deere round balers on it too.

A 1" cheapie strap with a WLL of how many lbs? Pretty sketchy.

nice catch. Around here, with all that new stuff, that would be on Marketplace for $1200. Bet you paid half or less.
NY has the same ticket system, they call it fix it tickets. If it is repaired within 24 hrs, no fine.

NOT so in Tennessee ALL the dot enforcement was handed over to the highway patrol. They all had to
attend schooling and write all the dot tickets. In Tennessee he would most likely have been ticked
for improper tie downs.

I tend to be the king of overkill when I put something on a trailer.

4 chains
4 corners
4 boomers wired shut after tightening

My logic is if one securement fails I still have enough hold from the other 3 to keep the cargo in place until I stop and fix it.

I remember seeing the aftermath of what happened when a guy hauling a Bobcat had a single tie down let go.

He stopped at a light and the Bobcat rolled forward taking out the box and tailgate of his pretty truck.

Show a photo of your new find and everybody wants to play DOT officer....predictable. Cub looks good to me and I don't care how it's tied down.

Looks like a good find, nice Woods mower and good tires. Maybe some Kroil down through the plug holes will help free it up .How many cubs does this make ? You are making me miss having a cub and now I want one , if it wasnt so far maybe you could sell me one!

One of the responders who commented on the tie downss actually IS a retired DOT officer, now see if you know which one it is. (I do!)

Oh dear, maybe itll free up. We unstuck a couple before you may get lucky. Free to try anyways. Looks like a nice cub

you would if it came off there and killed your family , and bankrupted the owner of the tractor in law suits

As the police officer walked by the trailer he twanged on the straps on left side and nodded. Never mentioned them. That cub is tired down better than 99 percent of farm equipment on trailers in Alabama. He also missed the fact I had a busted side on a trailer tail light, no trailer tag. And my insurance card was expired. He said he would check that on the computer. All good. Today I am thankful that I live in Alabama ,where good, common sense is allowed. Instead of the tyranny of y'alls DOT ....... And police officers do their job. He was friendly and professional.

In Alabama he was just glad you had some lights, tractor was fastened down with something, you were sober, and you were polite. Got caught in speed trap at harpersville a few years ago. Had 2 others in car with me. Speed limit changes from 70 to 55 just as you cross the bridge into harpersvile. Missed the signage. Was running with traffic. Cop pulled me over and walked up to vehicle and asked for license. I replied that before I moved my hands from steering wheel there was 4 shotguns, around 500 shot shells, and a 380 pistol in car. Cop laughed and said ok, let me see your license. Did I know I was going 75. Said no. Gave them to him and back to his car he went. Figured I was in for a good ticket. He came back and asked if we were headed to selwood farms to shoot. Said we were and did he want to come. Said he had to stay and stop speeders. Gave my license back and said slow down and have a nice day.

guess if you had the tractor in gear it would not be so hard on those baby straps. guess you were lucky.

Lights!! DOT scale inspection a few weeks ago, written warning for the BACKUP lights not working. Last week our mechanic stopped by to do my annual inspection, everything was fine and he put on a new sticker. 6 hours later I walked around the truck, and I had a headlight out. The black 1 inch straps we use at work are DOT load rated for 500 #. 4 of them give you a load of 2000 #

2000 total but how much end to end and side to side??

Only 1000.

if you had to make a emergency stop, or worse rear end someone do you believe that tractor would stay on the trailer? i don't think the single strap on the back tires would prevent the tractor from perhaps ending up crushing you in the cab. i lost my brother in law on a motor cycle trip because of $4.00 dollar tie downs. i'm sure you're a nice guy. i enjoy reading your posts, but good straps/chain don't really cost that much. especially compared to what that tractor coming off the trailer would cost you. you could very well injure someone that doesn't even know what a tractor is.

Your kidding, right?
Nearly all motor vehicle regulations are codified in state law.
Such as safety,, minimum equiment, functioning brakes, lights, weight limits per axle and on and on.
State law is/can be enforced by any variety of law enforcement officer.
From d.o.t. To game warden an vice versa.
Do they enforce outside of their "specialty" ???
Mouth off or act like an azzhat and you will wish you had not.

Now that we have all bittched, harped and whined (me included) , getting back to the topic it looks like you picked up yourself a real good deal.
I hope you can fire it up and make a good working unit out of it.

I worked 40 years around heavy equipment for multi- multi million dollar contractors, just you showing your methods bothers me to no end.

guess some dont know what a 4 point tie down is... Determined has it outlined. it definitly not what the picture shows. just saying .. not bitching.

Here where I am it all depends what class license you have. If you have any sort of CDL the way you have it you would have been parked no questions asked. Here a tractor has to have chains or straps rated ate 2 or 3 times the weight of the machine your hauling. Plus if you have a CDL and riding with someone that has something like that not only can the driver get a ticket but the rider can too. BTDT and have had more then one person I know who wasn't the driver get a ticket because he/she had a CDL

I'm a retired DOT Trooper. No playing here!

A friend who was the auditor for a small city near me said the cops told him that they don't give tickets, you have to earn them.

(quoted from post at 02:17:52 08/27/21) Not required on vehicles under 10,000 pounds, one of sufficient working load limit is legal.

Depends on the particular state law and what the vehicle is involved in.
