On a tractor ride in Yorktown, Illinois today. South of town is Amish country. There were a couple of small fields of this.

One of the locals said that they used it for medicinal purposes but couldnt remember the name of it. It looked like a cross between weeds and trees, most of the small berries were green, but a few had turned dark purple. Another rider guessed Elderberries. Any guesses?
 
Elder berries, my mother used to make pies and maybe jelly. Now they're supposed to be some kind medicinal supplement, my wife buys the stuff.
 
Elderberries...I pick several pecks every year from wild growing ones on the farm....give some away, my wife makes jams and jellies and pies from the rest. Very tasty!

Sambucus (elderberry). The neighbor lady makes a cough syrup from the juice of the wild ones that can be found in the mountains around here- N. ID. Works well, especially when its a free medicinal. The bears tend to tear down the bushes during a good berry year. Steve
 
My Grandma told me years ago that she had an aunt with heart dropsy.
She drank elderberry wine to help with it.

Grandma use to make elderberry wine. I have heard it medicinal value but couldn't remember for what. Our elderberries out here dont look that big and are more blue. I will have to see if there are any left.
 
Sambucus (Elderberry) Deciduous shrub or trees. In there Natural state these western natives are rampant, fast growing , wild looking. There five different types listed. Found in the Sunset The Western Garden Book on page 459. My book might be different than others because I use to use it at work in land scaping.
 
Elderberry. Dont eat them raw. They are toxic if not cooked. Jam made of apple/elderberry mix is one of my favourites.
