I drive daily a 94 chevy suburban 1500, had over 25 years .. it has over 172ooo miles keep regular maintained on it ..I put on 10 or least miles a day .. check the transmission and the oil is full but it's not a bright red it's a dull red ...
<>
Question : Should I change the filter and trans. oil ?? I have heard when a vehicle gets over so many miles it's best to leave the trans oil alone .. new oil would cause the transmission to slip ... is this true ??
NOT having ANY problems now ..
.......... THANKS for any advise you share .... mark

You are very lucky if you have had no problems with that transmission. If it were mine it would have had 3 full fluid and filter changes by now. Scheduled maintenance prevents problems.

I've owned a number of GM pickups and 'Burbs from that era, all bought used, and most with a lot of miles. A couple were bought as "first vehicles" for "new driver" teenage sons, so they got a workout, I'm sure!

On most of them, when bought, I've drained the transmission oil and replaced with new, then run it out the oil cooler line to flush the converter, then replaced the filter and refilled with new oil.

I have never had an issue after doing that, and have had good transmission life afterwards.

(Of course that doesn't PROVE the oil changes did any good, but they apparently did no harm!)

Just my life experience, others claim to have different/negative results, proceed at your own discretion, YAMMV!

Yes, do change it if it's time.

Changing fluid and the filter does no harm as long as it is done properly, the correct fluid and amount are used, and the pan goes back on clean.

The old stories about causing the transmission to fail are generated from waiting too long, the the seals and clutches are already damaged. A new filter gives a temporary fix, then soon fails again as the clutches are shedding material clogging the filter.

The old Ford transmissions had several small bolts of different lengths holding the filter on. Getting them mixed up, or over tightening could damage the valve body, causing all kinds of problems.

And always use the proper fluid. Some are very specific, and it makes a big difference.

Avoid contaminating the transmission with grit or gasket sealer.

I have had trannys start to act funny and have changed the oil and filter to get many more miles out of them I had my moms flushed out one time and didnt have any trouble out of it but have had people say if you flush them out they give you problems but you I haven't heard that changing oil and filter causing any problems I always see gunt under filter so I think cleaning all that out and new filter is a good thing

What does your owner's manual say? That's probably the best advice you can get.

Have you followed the maintenance schedule in the owner's manual?

I have GMC changed every 60K, if it needs it or not. I pull a trailer with mine.
Cheap insurance. It's my money and I feel it cheaper than a transmission.
