The parts we ordered from here at YT came in so we got to work. So heres where were at. Carburetor is back together and on. New sediment bowl. New fuel line. Changed oil and filter. No water in the oil at all. New spark plug wires, cap, rotor, coil cover, and points set to .013. Rewired tractor with 10ga wire. Checked the valve clearance. Now the bad news. It looks like the starter is shot. It will barely try to turn the engine over then quits. I took it apart and cleaned it up but it didnt get better. I tried 2 different fully charged batteries straight on the starter and it still wont turn the tractor over. Not sure what were gonna do about that yet. Other than the starter can you think of anything we forgot to check before we try to crank this thing up? As alway I appreciate your thoughts!

How were you connecting the starter directly, jumper cables? If so, that's not a good test.

How is the starter switch? If there is high resistance across the switch the starter will not get good connection to the battery. Put your volt meter across the starter switch, try the starter. The voltage should be near zero with a good switch connection.

Pictures of your helper bring back memories! Could have been me except I would be head to toe in grease! LOL

Hi there 1939farmall sounds like you are real close to cranking your and your sons tractor. Great photos BTW. Hey.. is that a shotgun shell next to your sons right arm?? If so maybe for safety reasons it probably would be best to put in a safe place besides a working area with hammers etc. Accidents happen in a second. If not then I apologize profusely. Thanks for the post. Wingnut

I have a start relay wired in and Im using a new start button. When it wouldnt roll over I bypassed my wiring and hooked the battery to the tractor ground cable like normal and used a jumper from the other battery post to the post on the starter. It still didnt want to roll over. I made sure I had good grounds on the cable and starter to frame. Ill have to hook it back up and put my meter on it as you suggested.

Hi wingnuttx. Its actually a shotgun shell shaped flashlight my wife got me! No need to apologize. Im glad you pointed out something that didnt look safe. Your right it only takes a second for something to go wrong. I appreciate it.

I was interested by the shot gun shell as well, but after thinking about it I remembered seeing those type of flashlights before. Are you using a 6 or 12 volt battery? Unless you have an exceptional set, most jumper cables these days are more insulation than conductor. If you are using a 6 volt battery, instead use a 12 volt it will not hurt a thing if you jump direct to the starter. If your jumper cables have NEAR a 1/4 inch conductors they will probably give a good test of if your starter is okay coming off a 12 volt battery. I realize your tractor had not been used for a while but usually if a starter has a bad problem you know right away by the burnt smell when your open it up.

I didnt smell anything burnt. It just had a lot of dirt in it. I was using 6 volt batteries . I was thinking I could use a 12 volt to the starter like you said. I also have an extra batter cable I think Ill try that instead of jumper cables. Thanks.

1939farmall. And Id expect you to do the same for me. Pretty nice gift she gave you. Those are the best kind of you ask me. New topic your son will be so far ahead of many children his age and even older because of this interest in mechanics. It can lead to numerous opportunities later on in his life. Besides, youll both have great memories of this current project. Best regards. Wingnut-Keith

My advice is to pull out the spark plugs and try to spin it. I am kind of thinking on an off chance some liquid got in and hydrolocked it.

Starters can stick from sitting, but you pulled it and cleaned it so that should not be the case. I agree with pulling the plugs to make sure it is not hydro locked. If you have a way to pull start it I would try that next, if it starts that would narrow down your starter issues to electrical . You might also want to consider .020 gap for the points, .023 on the plugs, I like autolites.

When using 6 volt batteries your starting amperage in high and heavy cables should be used. As others said try 12 volt battery and pull the plugs to be sure the engine turns freely.

I would set the starter on the floor then connect to the battery and see if it goes. If so then check cables and connections on tractor. If not then see if it will turn over one revolution with the fan and belt with the plugs out if so then drag it to start the first time. Air cleaner would be another thing to check/clean. Look up in the pipe to see if it is open or full of dirt.
