Leg cramps again

A friend that runs marathons told me that magnesium helped
cramps and you guys may have recommended it to and I
didnt a quick duck duck go search came up with magnesium
and potassium and calcium I got the mag and potassium
waited on the calcium for now but so far I still get cramps but
they dont latch on near like they used sometimes they would
stay for two or three days or more .

Don't forget about sodium (salt). Even if on a low sodium diet, if you are having cramps you may be low. The other thing is hydration. Got to have enough fluid in your body to move all those electrolytes around. Water, gatorade or similar drinks, or pedialyte. Coffee and soda won't do it and can make things worse. The other bad one is alcohol. You can actually pee out more than you take in. Been in fire and EMS for 40 years, still active. Was a full time paramedic in large urban area for 20 years. I don't know it all, but do know a lot on this subject. Brian

Hi... my buddy has cramps all the time...I was telling him about mine...he looked at me and said...drink some pickle juice!!! didnt believe him...so his wife chimed in by saying she makes sure there is a jar in the fridge.... you dont have to drink alot... a couple swallows.... I tried it and it does work...I'm serious Thank you...

Keep your body hydrated & less stress. May want to check out some new footwear if your shoes or boots are wearing out or getting uneven. Just a few things that have worked for me. Also heard apple cider vinegar or pickle juice works good. Haven't tried those, yet. Cramps haven't been bad for a few years since I cut back on smoking.... & copious amounts of stress & anxiety.

I have tried pickle juice bananas and mustard nothing seemed to help . I drink about two gallon of milk a week

Going through that much water you might want to pick up some salt tablets at the drug store and try them. Back when I was young and working outside all the time I had to take them.

SV,

I get cramps all the time. Both in my hands and in my legs/feet. My wife bought some over-the-counter cream at some drug store that is supposed to help resolve cramps and muscle spasms. I have never had any confidence in over-the-counter treatments, but this stuff really works for me. I have no vested interest in this stuff and I have absolutely nothing to gain by telling you about it. It just works for me. The product is called Theraworx. The active ingredient in it is magnesium sulfate. As soon as the cramp starts, I rub it into the cramping area. It stinks. Within just a very few minutes (2 or 3) the cramp is resolved.

If I were you, I would ignore this note. It sounds too good to be true. But it really does work for me.

Wife gets them at night sometimes. We keep Pedialite on hand for those times. Works for her

You gotta have the right balance of those three and also sodium. With the amount of milk you drink, I dont think lack of calcium is your problem. For variety, a medium potato has twice the K of a banana.

We keep Body Armor in stock, it is basically a fruit juice based version of Gatorade.

Another good source of potassium is V8 juice with 15% your daily need in 12 oz can. I can never find the pickle juice in the refrigerator in the middle of the night so I started keeping V8 handy. With a bad leg cramp, I can guzzle a can in about 30 seconds and the cramp will subside in about two minutes. I have drank two cans when I had a cramp in both legs and again they shortly let go.

When I feel one coming on I drink a couple glasses of water and within 10 minutes they are gone. Stay hydrated and you won't be getting them.

I get them because I take Metformin for my diabetes. Two things that help are Q10 capsules, one per day and a machine called a Revitive which is a circular pad that you put your bare feet on and it sends electrical pulses through the legs, just a tingling sensation but it really works well. I use it in the evenings while watching TV.

Most people I know who use the Revitive think it is wonderful but I would take medical advise if you have a heart pacemaker.

My uncles just turned 89, he was a dairy farmer most of his life too and he swears by magnets. Could be just mind over matter but hes never without one and says he has few pains. Years ago he kept a couple cow magnets at the foot of their bed now he wears a q-Ray bracelet

A bar of Ivory soap placed under the bottom sheet of my bed seems to solve my leg cramp problems at night.

I used to wake up in the middle of the night with leg cramps. My wife suggested doing leg stretch exercises. I thought it was silly. Tried bananas, potatoes, more water, gator-aid, all the great cures. Finally tried stretches, they worked for me.

(quoted from post at 17:56:53 08/09/21) It is far better to increase your intake of those three via food vs pills.

DoubleO7, that is many times true, but there are many cases where it is not. Blanket statements are not often productive.

Some people have to take Diuretics, sometimes called water pills, help rid your body of salt (sodium) and water. Most of them help your kidneys release more sodium into your urine. The sodium takes with it water from your blood, decreasing the amount of fluid flowing through your

Diuretics also flush out vital electrolytes your body needs resulting in leg cramps.

Caffeine is also a Diuretic.

Go to Dr and have him test for everything.

The older we get, the more our body starts to fail.

Monthly I have to get a Vitamin B12 shot and take 50,000 units of D3.

Welcome to old age. Take Barney with you to make sure Dr doesn't touch you inappropriately.

A friend of mine said his wife had those issues. He said she stopped drinking diet sodas and had no more issues. Something about the fake sugar in it. May not be your problem, but I thought it interesting.

I also get leg cramps at night. I also take 250mg Mag. daily, but keep Theraworx at my bed side all the time. Theraworx is what works for me.

I take 200 MG of potassium every morning and almost never have leg cramps anymore.
I sweat like a mule when I am out working and use salt on my food to replace what I lose.
When I have blood work done , my potassium and sodium levels are always in the good range.

When do you get the cramps and where are they? Do they come only with walking/running and stop with rest? Are they mainly in your calves? If yes, they are likely from a femoral artery blockage and surgery will likely be required.

If the cramps are unrelated to exercise then eating a banana every day will help them.

DoubleO7, that is many times true, but there are many cases where it is not. Blanket statements are not often productive.

I stand by my "blanket" statement.
If you can identify what element your body needs to prevent the condition, it is better to eat more of it vs any otc pills.
Much easier for the body to absorb what is needed via food.
Versus pills.

Of course there are medical cases where the deficiency is so bad you can't eat enough to get what is needed.

Well i also get leg , arm and hand cramps . Now according to the QUACKS my blood work is great and they have no idea BUT here take these Horse pills . Now what i have learned on my own as to when i get them is (1) If i drink ice tea , (2) if i eat ice cream . If i eat Chicken i don't sleep , if i don't have a couple fingers of C/R before bed we have nightmares and flash backs . The flash backs happen more from the end of January till mid May.

I have to get my blood work done twice a year and everything always comes back ok so I dont know I do know the potassium and magnesium are helping a lot the cramps are a lot less and not near as bad

I dont mind the hand cramps as because I can make them go straight whether they want to or not but they still hurt . The muscle cramps in my side are what I really hate because no matter what I do they just get worse until they are ready to relax

Don't know if your taking cholesterol meds or not but they rob the muscles of QOQ10. After I was taking them for a while I stated having leg cramps so bad at night I'd have to jump up out of the bed and try to walk it off. I thought they were going to break my legs it was so bad. My doc told me to start taking QOQ10 and I only get one every now and then and they aren't that bad when I do get one. It won't hurt you to try even if you aren't taking the meds.

That's great.
Don't know how my Grandpa plowed behind mules all day.
Grandma said he would salt his food till it looked like it snowed on it.
After his overalls dried all night, she said the back of them was covered in salt.

DoubleO7 that is unfortunate that you stick by your blanket statement. As I stated before it is well known that it is best to get minerals and most vitamins with your food, but it is also well know that as we age our digestive systems aren't able to take some needed minerals and vitamins up from the food in the amounts needed from the food that we would normally eat, and eating enough of those certain foods to get the minerals or vitamins that we need can be very unhealthy.

Nobody wants to try it but here goes again. One teaspoon of Baking Soda mixed in a 1/2 glass of water. Cramps will be gone by the time you get back in bed.

The capacity to absorb vitamin B12 from a food-based diet decreases in older adults
and over time can result in the food-cobalamin malabsorption syndrome, characterized
by mild vitamin B12 deficiency, decreased whole body stores and metabolic disturbances

Older age and certain lifestyle habits, such as smoking and excessive alcohol con-
sumption, also can make it difficult to get all the nutrients you need from food. As
for boosting the amount of specific vitamins and minerals, there are times when this
can make sense, especially for women.

T o avoid leg cramps i drink tonic water and Powerade mixed together. Or separate.. You can use tonic syrup I place of tonic water to avoid the carbonation, and it comes sugar free with out artificial sweeteners. The syrup works just. As. Well only use a tablespoon for each. 16 oz glass..
