I need a small transmission to reverse the PTO direction on a tractor so it will run a PTO winch I have. Used to be you find a tranny out of a little Datsun or Toyota and you'd be set. I don't think anyone drives a standard anymore! And suggestions that are readily available for cheap? I can weld up a direction reverser out of plate and bearings, but a small tranny capable of handling 45-ish is what I'm looking for.
 
Did you even check your local Craigslist or Facebook
marketplace? More manual transmissions are in use than
you think. Many of your ..ecological types.. insist on them.
 
The old truck 4 speeds are pretty short. If you could hook up Hydraulics to run the clutch packs a Chevrolet power glide with the bell housing cut off and a short output shaft would be cool to run a winch, engaging the forward and reverse clutch pack will lock the output shaft. Like a trans-brake.

Nope, already thought of that, but thanks. That puts the cable coming in way below the fairlead, which is lined up with the top of the drum. We're talking 7-8" lower.

Must be you're using Classic view, on modern my location, the St Lawrence Valley of Northern NY shows, just as your Lake of the Ozarks shows. Thanks anyway.

Been watching for about 3 years now and haven't run across anything workable.

Finding one seems to be the problem. What this is for is a crawler/tractor drawn log arch using a 5 ton surplus 6x6 winch. I need something fairly short capable of handling the PTO HP of anything from a JD 40 crawler to a DB990. So 20 or so to 50+. Thanks for the thoughts!
 
Check surplus center ,or- how about a 3 speed from a rusted out old Jeep ? I imagine there must be a few of them around up in your
area in the weeds or a junk yard.

You would have to leave the transfer case on it.
But if you could live with the overall length, it would give you six forward and two reverse speeds.
