JD 4020 syncro shift

I have this JD 4020 syncro shift and it has a shifting into reverse problem. All forward gears seem to operate just fine. I can shift it into reverse sometimes five times in a row and it works fine and then the next ten times it will grind the gears. Then on the eleventh time it might go into reverse. Can someone with more experience than me on this transmission tell me if I am in the right forum group and what is causing the shifting problem please. I know because of clutch problems, I am going have to split this case. Thank you all in advance.

You should post in the John Deere forum.

Most likely you are looking at worn out
shifter linkages that have damaged the
synchronizers. Those will have to be
addressed along with the clutch.

You could also post in the John Deere area on this site. I would check all shift linkage for wear and adjustments but
am leaning towards the issue being the reverse synchronizer on the top shaft of the transmission

Define the clutch problem better here, and when posting on the JD forum. Issues with clutches can absolutely affect synchronizer performance. Jim

I am not a expert but, I would take the
rod off from Reverse and with a trusted
person holding the clutch down. I would
try by hand to put it in reverse. Might
just be the linkage. Guess for safety
should jack it up.

Not an expert but just think that the newest 4020s are approaching 50 years old. If your tractor has over say, 10000 hours, it has been shifted thousands of times.
Could well be something in synchronizers or linkages. Your tractor likely has had the clutch replaced at some point but could also be a related problem. Good luck
and let us know what you find.

Does it grind trying to go into reverse or after the shifter is in the quadrant and you let out the clutch it
grinds? Two different problems.

I forgot to mention, that the gears only grind when letting out the clutch and not when shifting.

That is a solid indication to look at linkage wear. When the wear is on the edge of not working, the 50/50 in or not in
happen. Jim

Many times when you shift through 1 and 8 and the reverse gears, you'll find a sweet spot where the gears engage. As you learn & work with your machine, you will notice this between gears and bump the
lever up or down in the quadrant channel to achieve engagement. Yes, this problem can be improved by adjustment but there's probably no major problem with the transmission. Nevertheless, if you're getting
grinding gear engagement in all shifting positions you should suspect the proper release of the the main clutch.

The shifter detents are worn and don't stop the shift quadrants in the reverse gear. There are two caps on the
right side of the transmission under the caps are springs which push the detent into the shift quadrant. The
detents are cone shaped and wear a groove in the quadrant causing the quadrant not to stop in the reverse
position. Sometimes when you shift to reverse the quadrant actually goes beyond reverse and disegages reverse
gear. Oft times when this occurs a very slight nudge forward on the shift lever will re-egage reverse. There are
two was to fix this. 1 replace the quadrant, 2 replace the cone detent with 4230 ball and socket detents (this
takes very careful trimming of the detent spring.
