A bunch of quail died

Friends raise quail on my place and have a flight pen built.
Had no problems losing any to disease or anything.
This morning a hole was ripped in the pen about 3 feet high and there were 27 dead quail.
Most had there heads eaten off.
They have seen a skunk around and think that is what did it.
Someone is coming to buy the rest of them today.
Friends have a bunch of wire that is like light weight landing mat.
Gonna build a new flight pen out of that.

I doubt skunk.
Most wild animals kill what they need to eat only.
Feral Cats kill everything in sight.
 
Here the animal that eats only the head is a mink, however they usually go under the fence not thru.
 
Had a coon get in a pen with 25 12 week old pullets, he killed 15 by eating their heads and the other 10 had their heads chewed and were blind. He made the mistake of not leaving. Big mistake, he got to meet Soldier a 60 pound Treeing Walker Coonhound.
 
Coon, mink, weasels, owls, and hawks will all eat only the head. Not sure why, but its common. If theres a hole ripped open, almost a guarantee to be coon. Usually a family of them this time if year.
