Trailer brake check

I am hauling my tractor to a mowing job today. Not paying attention, then the car a couple lengths head decides to make a left turn. All I could see is red lights on the car in front of me. I stomped on the brakes. Lost of smoke from my trailer brakes. So I guess they work. On the way back I could see a couple of skid marks of equal lengths. Both wheel brakes seam to be equal. Brake check complete. Last year I replaced one axle. This fall I'm going to replace the other. I know I should have replaced both, but ran out of time. The original axle brakes were not made anymore. Back many years ago while I was driving my 1963 Diamond-T I had a VW bug pull out of a parking lot right in front of me. I hit the brakes and locked them up. Lots of noise due to the locked up 8 tires on the dump truck. Guess he/she heard it because they got out of my way fast. Had they not well that bug would have been flat out road kill and not in a good way

I started with my Big Tex trailer. I replaced the big tex axles with very heavy duty axles My brother picked up some where years ago. I don't remember the brand. The company stopped making that axle, and parts dried up. I could get the lining replaced, but the magnet was the problem. When I start asking about a 7 inch round magnet, that's where I would lose parts people. My new axle I believe is a Dexter. Stan

(quoted from post at 04:30:29 07/30/21) I do my brakes checks on grass, fewer flat spots on tires.

Geo, I would like to see that!!! How long a stretch do you use in order to develop some momentum???

A few years back bought a 35 ft. goose neck trailer and pulled it with a International single axle tractor. Used it to haul 22 big round bales weighing around 1100 pounds. I did not think it was stopping like it should so checked the wheels for heat. No heat on back tandems. Ask around and finally a old man told me what to do to make them work. About a year later
heard a truck jack-knifed east of town. Heard a car went to turn into a driveway. Was the same kind of tractor and same kind of new trailer. Makes you wonder.
