Can you identify this engine?

I was going to post this on the Classic Truck Forum, but couldn't get it to open. I've been looking at buying any old truck to haul tractors and implements. This engine is in a 1966 Chevrolet C50 truck that is for sale. Obviously, it is not the original engine. Any idea what kind of engine it is?

Back then different companies thought they had the solution for smog control. That may be a good example. Stan

Mean rascal's to work on : ( intake was integral to the head (maybe exhaust manifold) with all those pipes disassembly was a bear... Cracked heads were common. Valve cover leaked it would cook a gasket pert near impossible to stop the leak but what chebby valve cover till the Vortec came out did not leak...

Ignition timing was always over advanced the carbs were lean it was a feat to tame the advance and tune that carb... You were gonna get burnt messing around the engine with all those pipes : (

They used that carb on other engines I use to buy the parts in a assortment so I did not have to buy a kit for one little part. I still have tools to adjust the main metering system. Later on they went electronic you removed the center cover added more fuel to it enjoy the check engine light its gonna light up BUT it will run good now...

Those were miserable years EFI solved the evolution of emission carbs/systems...

Yep late 70s to mid 80s Chevy 250, our farm had one in the 79 1/2 ton we bought new. Run it to death and replaced it with a small block 307. Only thing good about those engines is they came with a split manifold. Put some dual exhaust on it and it will really kackle!

I would Id as a sorry end to a good engine. However, With correct frame pads a nice 350 with a q-jet will fit right in.

I have a 292 6 sitting right behind me.. Back when the stepson was in the Navy he had me start building it for him. Bored 60 over and has a pulling cam in it and rebuilt head. But he got booted out of the Navy back when the then president shut down a number of seabee battalions. That presidents named started with an O by the way. He got a general discharge because he didn't do his 6 years he had signed up for

Rich, As a Veteran you know that a General Discharge is awarded as a part of non judicial punishment for unacceptable behavior. Where the Service declines to bring more severe charges. A Reduction in Force or RIF is usually awarded an Administrative Discharge. There's more to the story than he told you. And he DID lose some Veterans benefits with that General Discharg, including GI Bill.
Have you seen his DD-214?

1980s 250 Chev 6 with a two stage carburetor , integral head/manifold and a split exhaust manifold. The integral head/intake manifold design was prone to cracking if overheated. An older style head and manifold will fit. A pretty tough engine otherwise.

I have a late 60s or early 70 250 Chevy in my shop. I rebuilt it years ago and it is bored 40 over and the head was milled. Only part that makes it look newer is the electronic ignition distributor. It might have 3000 mile on the rebuild. Took it out of the 1969 Chevy pickup it was in due to the rear axle bracket that had the coil springs on it had broken right at the spring area. That was a common problem with the old 1/2 ton Chevy pickups of those years.

I don't know those trucks but what makes you think obviously not orignl? Way it is installed or what?

GM never put an engine that small (250 cu. in.) in their larger trucks in 1966. Also, it is painted blue and not orange. Engines were orange in 1966.

Not all of them. Some were gray; some were greenish-gray.
rue enough, but corporate blue began in 77.
