Carb update

I posted about my carb problems a day or 2 ago. I took it apart and cooked it in a crock pot full of vinegar for a day and a half. Cleaned it up and reassembled it. I got real brave and painted it before I put it on and tried it out. I put it on this am and it fired right up, no choke. Took it for a spin, from an idle in high gear, it accellerates good, runs smooth. Still idles funny. When you pull the throttle all the way back, it slows down to 1000rpm, stays there for a minute or so and then slows down to 500 to 700 rpm and stays there. I turned the idle screw but it didn't make much difference. I'm taking it on a ride tomorrow, I'll see how it works out. I added a in line fuel filter to it. Chris

probably need to adjust the linkage as per manual, or the governor is not up to snuff. i am just curious why the starter end cap is warped like that?

I noticed that the hole in the governor arm is wallowed out much larger that the rod. Might have something to do with it. Starter was like that when I got it.

Can you make it idle down by holding the throttle against the stop screw?

If yes, the governor link needs adjusting.

If no, there is a problem with the throttle plate and shaft, or a vacuum leak.

If you can't get the idle down to the 400-500 range, the idle mix screw will have no effect.

That it now starts without choke when warm is progress!

Try bypassing the inline filter. They don't work for me all the time unless I have a fuel pump. I replaced my inline with an red disk screen inline used on some lawnmowers.

I would spend a few minutes and adjust the valves.

This is assuming the governor arm is not moving the throttle plate.

Often a large fluctuation in RPM like you described can be caused by a valve that is just on the edge of being too tight.

As the engine warms and cools expansion and contraction will result in the valve making a seal then not quite making a seal.

Had a super 77 with idle issue. The washer in the governor was worn and wore into the housing. Put anew washer it was better. Put a second washer in it and adjusted to the book. Idled down to 450 like it should.
