The barn I keep my tractor in

Ive had my barn sided with steel siding but need to match some of the wooden doors. Is all paint now latex ? I dont know what is on it now. Should I just scrape off the loose stuff and paint with latex? Should I go with a coat of primer first?

If you expose bare wood when you scrape off the old paint, you should prime the wood before painting.
New oil-based paint is still available on the market. There are also special primers for difficult
situations like flaking or peeling paint. You should probably ask your wife about the right color to
paint those doors. (Experience talking there.)

I paint everything outside with oil paint. Have no trouble finding it at Diamond vogel. The paint store professionals can tell you how to prep them.

I use latex enamel on outdoor stuff , I even painted my shop with steel siding. It has stayed on excellent. Scrap loose paint, fill cracks with latex caulk and paint with a primer first , then a coat of finish latex. Our local barn painter uses latex on all roofs. It expands and contracts and doesn't crack and start to peel . Latex works on just about any outdoor application. Its been about five years since I painted my shop and it looks great

I've yet to put paint on wood that sooner or later wouldn't peal off. Got tired of painting.
Last year I put vinyl siding over ceder siding on house. NO MORE PAINTING,
I wrapped windows with Aluminum.

We decided we are too old to paint.

All Door on my pole barns are metal doors.

Best advice for paint would be at a professional paint store.

In my opinion, and I'm no paint expert, the belief that oil base paint is superior to latex for exterior work in residential use is a myth. Today's latex paints are at another level as to what they were 25 years ago. Once again, just my opinion and from my experience I have got less peeling and cracking with a good quality latex than with oil based paint.

Ive always made an effort to use oil based for anything exposed to the weather. Repainted an exterior door last year that gets lots of sun and weather with one of the newer latex paints. Have to say its held up much better.
