Areas with Normal or Extra Hay

Good morning all,

Is there anywhere in the midwest that has gotten normal rainfall and has hay this year? Thinking hard about buying hay and having it hauled to Minnesota, instead of dumping cows for nothing like everyone else is doing. Both options will be expensive, but I feel I should atleast try. Thank you.

Have plenty in Ohio. Had good rain between 1st and 2nd. Nice and dry now for 2nd cut hay. Auction Prices are relatively low compared to what 1st cutting was selling for.

I am in central ks and we have had plenty of rain but not flooded. I am not a hay guy but everywhere I drive I see the windrows are lush and thick and the stacks of round bales are high. One property near me generally appears to get 20 to 25 rounds per year from a small field and so far this year there are over 50 stacked by the road, waiting to be hauled out.

haymap.com is one site that connects buyers and sellers. There are others so look online so you can compare hay type, cost, and hauling

Won't stop raining long enough here in Western New York to make dry hay. Last time we had more than a day without rain was over a month ago.

Best I've been able to do is make a 3 acre piece in 23 hours, cutting, baling, and wrapping for a whopping 13 bales of silage. It's the only second cutting that I've made without it getting rained on at all. The next closest is 18 bales of silage that got rained on before I could get them wrapped. I'd have more but a belt broke on the baler.

Lots of hay near Sioux Fall sd. Pretty good here in Mitchell? How much do yoy need? Grass or alfalfa or mix? Hay is 70 mikles west of SF.

I feel the same as you, too much rain. Lots of hay if
I could get a chance to make it. So far I have made
700 bales of wrapped hay. It can never sit long
enough to make dry hay before we get another rain.
I am just north on Lake Ontario

We could use 100+ round bales of grass or mix for beef cows. Going to Shevlin, MN 56676 which is north central MN. Gotta find someone to haul it though.

I think there is a line just north of me, we were very dry but caught some rains and hay is good here. Not far north, few dozen miles, and things go bad rapidly.

This week is gonna burn up again!

Our real dry period came as grass and second cutting alafalfa were being made, rains came just in time to start regrowth.

I just hauled the neighbors organic oats from Mankato Mn. to an organic dairy farm In Long Praire Mn. Holy cow are they dry up there. He does not have nearly enough organic alfalfa. Having it hauled in from somewhere in Wisc. He said people up there are already selling cows. He said good alfalfa rounds are selling for $400/ton. His second cutting went 1 bale per acre. I didn't ask him what normal yield is.

Yeah we're planning on buying more of those this year. They already like to munch on it as bedding, so we'll be able to stretch the hay some that way.

These guys do hay once a month. Might be worth a look. There are some other shops that do hay auctions. Check Steffes Auctions in Litchfield and Lundeen Auction in Hitchinson.

There has be hay in north east missouri, the yard needs cutting every 4 days. 10 inches of rain in two weeks, temps in the 80s,90s.

Lundeen is mostly small squares with a few big bales. Nice old style place.

Steffes is mostly semi loads of big bales. I think you can watch online now? Many are on a truck and list the per mile delivery charge if you win, truck is idling.....

A few years ago I had way more hay than I would use so I offered to give it away to anyone that would send trucks to get it, that was on this forum because they were having the same problem as now. No takers so I cut down on the amount I raise and bale. I wish I had enough to tell you to come get it but not anymore, I just have enough for my regular buyers. Sorry, Keith

Central Kentucky has had the best hay weather in my 20 year memory. We had an unusual dry week in May allowing us to bale some 1st cutting early. Then rain, then a week of hay weather, then rain, then a week of hay weather. 2nd cuttings are the biggest in my experience. One of my neighbors has cut and baled almost 1000 acres without rain on it already. More coming on second cutting.

Eastern Canada, lots of rain, little hay making weather. Rare to have more than one day in a row without a shower.

Yield is above average for me anyways.

Had one period of 3 days in a row of sun and was able to do the bulk of dry hay I needed. Everything else was haylage so didn't need to be dry to wrap.

6" of rain in the last 3.5 weeks. Land is getting really soft.
