Hello, I just got a 1971 JD401-A and I can't figure out what the "knob/lever" by the reverser is? I circled it in the photo.

Thanks.

Yes a bulb goes in it then a little metal cover with a slit in it goes on top of it to protect it and direct the light on the gauges.

The 401's are tuff machines you should enjoy owning it.

I was going to guess dash light as well.

When I bought my new to me NH 8970 tractor at auction and hopped in and drove it 120 miles home..... it has quite a lot of buttons and knobs on a big electronic dash
board, totally new to me.

While driving 120 miles at 19.4 mph, it can get a little boring. I really, really had to fight the urge to start pressing all those symbols on the dash to find out what they
do....

Could have bad results at 19.4 mph a long ways from home. :)

Seems odd to me to have a dash light that has to shine up to the gauges.

A number of manufacturers used similar arrangements for dash lights at one time or another. Various bulb sockets, some up, some down, and some sideways.

Agreed.
The black circle in the lower middle of this dash is one on a 53 Ford Jubilee.
The slot points forward to illuminate the gauges. Not very well
illuminated on a 6V system I might add, but better than nothing.
