New Hearing Aids

I had my hearing tested at the V.A. yesterday because it's time for an update on my hearing aids. Got new ones ordered with the updates and improvements thy have now. I'v had my old ones for 5 years now. The new ones will be rechargeable and I will be able to answer and hang up calls on my phone by tapping one of the aids, so completely hands free. Also getting a box that will let me raise or lower the tv sound coming to me without actually changing the tv volume for everyone else. He said my hearing is about where it was 5 years ago so that's a good thing. He cleaned and checked my old ones and sent one off to get it fixed so I will have a back up pair if I need them. V.A. has been pretty darned good to this old man.

I need them but im not paying the ridiculous price for them. I have a constant ringing in my ears. Hopefully one day I'll get a set.

I have had hearing aids for about 15 years and wouldn't consider not having them. They make a box for mine that sits under the TV and goes to my hearing aids but the sound was so tinnie I couldn't stand it so I took it back. I haven't watched a new movie for years because I can't understand what they are saying. Old movies are not a problem. I don't know if it is because of the technology of if modern actors have a mouth full of mush

Had mine over ten years now and the audio streaming is great but I still have trouble with off-screen voices and general conversation if I can't see the speaker's face.

rick, if your hearing loss is from your job check into workman's comp. Employers (like mine) will not always tell you it's covered.

My VA supplied hearing aids are also a little over 5 years old. Just before the lock down VA doctor told me I had a hole in my right ear drum so had surgery to repair that. Had to wait for healing before they could test my hearing again. I have an appointment August 20 in Indianapolis. When I made the appointment they said I will be getting upgrade. My old ones have been in the shop about every 8-9 months so I am ready to toss them.

Had my new aids maybe 4 years now, work just great, Young VA hearing test guy was really good , took his time to get every thing right
No way I could I buy the Quality Aids on My own , Thanks Uncle Sam !!

See where Medicare might start doing hearing, glasses, and dental for the rest of the crowd

If your new ones will pickup your phone, I think that means they have bluetooth capability.
If yes, you might check your tv for bluetooth capability.

My dad's hearing aids allow him to connect to the tv directly with his own volume level.

You can get a Bluetooth transmitter for under $20 that plugs into usb port for tv without bluetooth.

VA replaced this one after Molly nibbled on it. Fell out of my ear while napping. Going in tomorrow for maintenance, they dont sync to my phone properly. Took awhile to get an appointment so dont want to miss it. Ive had hearing aids for about 20 years, first mishap.

I am a Vet, was in 62-64. I have attempted to get hearing aids through the VA and am always told I do not qualify. Not rich, but not on welfare. What am I doing wrong?

Check your Medicare plan or shop around the plans available in your county before you sign up for your 2022 plan. Many plans cover hearing aids with a co-pay somewhere between $500 to $1,000 per ear for premium hearing aids. That's not free, but is more affordable than full price.

I have those rechargeable ones from VA. Get my phone calls through bluetooth. My problem is the calls only come through the left one (my worst ear) and I can't seem to get enough volume to hear the phone calls unless my environment is very quiet. I have the phone volume set as high as it will go. I love the no batteries feature of these. Good luck with yours.

IP: Ask what it is that results in "you don't qualify", if you want to know.

Go to your county Veteran services department they will start the process of getting the hearing aids and to get established with the va. It is not an overnight thing may take months!

I've had my hearing aids a little over a year now from the VA. I didn't realize how hard of hearing I was until I got them. I guess my wife was right. I remove them, while I'm on my tractor, because of the dust. Stan

Rick,

I've had that ringing sound in my ears for at least 25 years. Five years ago I bought hearing aids. They did not help, so I tried a different brand. I tried several other brands with no improvement, so I took them back and gave up. Recently, I went to Costco and bought a pair because I heard how good they are. They have a lot of good features, but they don't seem to help me hear. The ringing in my right ear overrides whatever sounds it encounters.

That's how I started. The county rep started the ball rolling for me through the American Legion. He had me get an appointment with V.A. and I was awarded 10% disability for the ringing and given a pair of hearing aids. About a month later I got a letter telling me to go to Dublin Ohio for a hearing test. Not too long after the test, the wife was checking our bank account and there was a pretty good amount added to it, then I received a letter telling me that I was awarded 50% along with the 10% for the ringing and I would get X amount every month along with 100% of my medical except for dental paid for. If you are a Vet. don't give up and start at your county V.A. rep. I know it sure has helped me. I would never have been able to get my hips replaced if it weren't for the V.A. Before that, I was on a copay system with them.

I have had costco phonak 9.0 for 2 years now I would t be with out them. I had to have a change made to the tunning of them and I live 3 hours away. Costco can do it over the internet so I don't have to go back. I was the first one to ever do this over the net for that store. I'm telling ya, I love costco.

I had the same problem initially.

I had to get my hearing loss service connected to qualify. The Veteran Service Officer (VSO) at the nearest VA Clinic walked me through it, filled out all the appropriate forms and sent them in after I signed them.

Due to nnalert and the normal gubbermint bureaucracy, it took quite a while, and I had to have not one but THREE more hearing tests (One civilian to establish hearing loss as my previous one was too old, one by a VA audiologist which included an interview to establish service connection, one by the clinic's audiologist to program the aids).

So yeah, it took a while, but SO worth it! Plus, now that my hearing loss is service connected, I also qualify for other VA services including eye care (with free glasses!) and dental care if I wanted to drive 120 miles round trip every time I needed my teeth cleaned.
