Greasing PTO Universals

OK, HIH do you get through the plastic shield on PTO shafts to grease the universal? I've given up and just cut the shield off, but that kinda defeats the purpose.

Wish the designers and engineers had to pull the maintenance on the stuff they build!

They can be a bear. Sometimes you have to tilt the shaft, roll the universal around, turn the shield....... Who the heck knows. Just stick a finger in there and keep moving things until you feel it.

Some you almost have to take the shaft off to get the right angle, I have been known to heat up a piece of steel tube and enlarge the hole enough to make it easier

Most have an access hole you can rotate to the fitting for easy greasing if everything is lined up just right and you stick you tongue out sideways and it has not been more than 6 days since the last full moon...

Sometimes greasing it before you hook it to the tractor is the only way possible as some you need to put the grease hose through the implement PTO coupler to access the u-joints zerk fitting.

There are some good videos on youtube that show how to take the pto shields apart to get access to the joints and shaft.

I mow an estate with a 17 foot 3 deck Bush Hog finish mower that has 4 PTO shafts and 51 total grease fittings. The universals at each end of the shafts can be easily greased through a hole in the shields using a 6 piece of pipe attached to the end of the hose. If your shield bells don't have holes get a 1 hole saw and make some. I have all the shafts timed so when I turn the first one up so it can be greased they are all up and just have to turn the shield.

On my bushhog 3008 mowers I take off the slip clutch shield when I buy them, drop the shaft off the tractor and rotate the pto till I get the right angle...do it every other job.

I usually take the shaft off to grease. On the round baler it is easier to push the pin and slide off then get in under the baler to find it. Most of them have a grease fitting on the telescope too. they can be accessed through a hole after the shaft is extended out to almost the end of travel. then rotate covers till the holes align with the fitting.
