John Deere 2240

Sorry, but this is long. Getting ready to break my 2240 in half. I ordered the online maintenance manual, parts manual, and operators manual. When I bought it, it was listed as a 1984 2240 with mfwd. The manuals say that they stopped making 2240's in 1981. It also states that my tractor serial number is from an 81. The manuals only show 2wd, and no indication of mfwd. In the serial number sequence, it has a "Q" indicating mfwd. I spent weeks going from the local dealer up to Deere with no resolve. Talking with yesterday's tractor on line, they couldn't locate a manual for an 84 with mfwd. They too said the serial number was an 81 2wd. They sent me to the forum. If I go on tractor house and look up 1984 2240 with mfwd, the show about a half dozen tractors just like mine with the 4wd and larger front tires. Any idea what kind of albatross I have, and where I can get the manuals for it. I want to know what I am going to encounter before I break it open. Thanks for reading this book.

Where are you?

Some DEEREs sold in Canada were numbered differently than the similar US versions.

That can cause confusion when one finds a new home on the other side of the border.

My 2140 two wheel drive, has the date stamped right onto the serial number plate on the frame rail. 81

What is the complete ID number of your tractor (you can use Xs for the last three digits of the 6 digits of the serial number if you want).

What are the John Deere publication numbers of the manuals you have? The parts catalog, at least, shows MFWD for tractors 350000 and after. It appears the serial number break applies to the Technical manuals as well and the index of the after 3500000 tractors TM shows MWFD in the power train section.

You might want to check your tractorhouse search criteria. The
newest 2240 I can find on the site is a single miss-listed 1983.
Are you using the detailed search function, where you can
search for a certain age range? You might already be aware, but
tractordata.com has some good basic information on that tractor,
including year by serial number. Good luck Great tractor!

2240 were built as US production starting in 1975 with serial number 180459L , ending in 1982 at 440444L
2240 German production started in 1976 at 179298, ended in 1982 at 438939

Please explain what you mean when you state "built as US production"? Yes there were tractors built for sales in N America & also for European countries. There were no JD 40 series utility Ag tractors built in Dubuque,Ia. JD ag utiliity tractor manufacturing ceased in Dubuque,Ia with the 2030. See photo below.

Maybe I should have said built in Germany for US market. 2240 were not marketed here in Canada. We had 1830's 2130's,
1840's and 2140's. No confusion at all!

As previously asked . Has some tractor jockey moved this tractor from the US, Canada and Europe . There are three different builds for those three regions .
What are the actual serial numbers . Should be a plate on the engine, plate on the right side of the transmission and numbers stamped into the cast iron frame below the rad grill.

2240------224SQ-----410968L. The operator manual is OML31364 E8. The parts catalog is PC 4151 and says May 11. The service manual is TM 4301. I purchased the tractor from a dealer in Abingdon VA in 2010. I have the original paperwork from Deere financial listing it as 84 with my serial number. He stated it came from the original owner on a farm outside bristol TN. The manuals I have were paid for and downloaded from online the schematic breakdown listed here from a manual for mfwd is no where to be found in my manuals.

I must be losing my mind, now tractor house has an 81 identical to mine. You can tell it's mfwd, but listed as 2wd. Even has the same loader bucket. So if mine was listed wrong, and misidentified on the paperwork, where are the manuals for 81 2240 with mfwd. I really want to study the schematics before I open up the machine.

PC4151 is for 2240 serial # <349,000.

Correct parts catalog is PC1764 for 2240 SN 350,000-.
Correct operators manual for your 2240 is OMR71859
Correct tech manual for your 2240 is TM1221

The 2040 was also notably confusing .
